Top Velbastaður Hotel Reviews

Hotel Brandan

10/10 Excellent

"The hotel is very nice; clean, good food and drink options, and positioned well with it not being directly in the city center but a short walk to town. You can walk through a beautiful park to get into town, which was also nice. There is a grocery store behind the hotel as well as the mall area/grocery about a 5 minute walk away. I did not get a chance to take a bus but the free, red buses have a stop right in front. I would definitely stay here again."

Hotel Djurhuus

10/10 Excellent

"We got a regular room very last minute and it was clean and relatively spacious for a standard room. The breakfast is great. A lot of hotel in the Faroe Islands and Scandinavia (in my experience) tend to do just bread with topping but they had warm options as well which I appreciated (scrambled and boiled eggs, waffles with syrup and whipped cream). A very good continental breakfast. The beds were also very comfortable and our room had a great view of the coast. If you have a car the parking situation is not great. The parking lot is very small and you have to reverse/drive out directly onto a relatively busy road. However that is just part of being in Torshavn, anywhere you go there is limited parking and lots of large SUV’s so just be mindful."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Velbastaður?

The best area to stay in Velbastaður is the village itself, particularly around the main road, Velbastaðvegur, and its surrounding lanes.

Velbastaður is a small, traditional Faroese village located on the southwestern coast of Streymoy. It's known for its stunning panoramic views across the Hestfjørður strait to the islands of Hestur and Koltur. The village is quite spread out, with houses dotted along the hillside, offering a peaceful and scenic retreat. You'll find a mix of traditional turf-roofed homes and more modern Faroese architecture.

This area is particularly well-suited for couples seeking a tranquil escape and a connection with nature. Staying in Velbastaður offers a quiet base with breathtaking views right from your accommodation, superb for relaxing after a day of exploring. There are numerous walking paths nearby, allowing you to easily access the beautiful coastal scenery.

Solo travellers will also appreciate the peaceful surroundings and the opportunities for quiet contemplation.

When is the best time to go to Velbastaður?

The best time to visit Velbastaður is during the warmer months, from June to August, when the weather is at its mildest and the days are longest.

During this period, the average daily temperature is around 13°C, making it comfortable for exploring the outdoors. You'll also benefit from extended daylight hours, often with up to 19 hours of daylight in June, which allows for longer sightseeing trips and hikes. This is particularly appealing for couples looking to make the most of the stunning landscapes without the rush.

For those who enjoy hiking and birdwatching, late spring (May) and early autumn (September) can also be excellent. While the weather might be a bit cooler and more unpredictable, these months often offer fewer crowds and a different kind of natural beauty as the landscapes change. This can be a great option for solo travellers seeking a more tranquil experience.
