It is situated on the Malabar Coast on the Arabian Sea, 54 kilometres northwest of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, and 20 kilometres southeast of Kollam, and is part of the Thiruvananthapuram district. In 2011, Varkala had a population of 40,000.<br>Varkala is an important Hindu pilgrimage site due to the 13th-century Janardana Swami Temple, dedicated to the god Vishnu. At the same time, thanks to its sandy beach nestled below the steep cliffs, Varkala has become a popular destination for Western holidaymakers after being discovered by backpackers as an alternative to nearby Kovalam. Tourism in Varkala has not yet reached the same scale as in the popular beach resort of Kovalam, but it is steadily growing with the construction of new hotels.
