Garden Oasis in the City
The Garden Chalet The Garden Chalet is a thoughtfully designed ADU with its own private entrance, full kitchen, and living room. It's a proper retreat, not a room in someone's house, but a complete space that happens to share a backyard with the owner (that's me, living upstairs). The Space Step inside and you'll find warm wood tones, natural light, and details designed to make you exhale. The bedroom is quiet and restful. The kitchen is fully equipped for real cooking, not just reheating takeout. The living room invites you to settle in with a book, a glass of wine, or a movie on a rainy Pacific Northwest evening. I spent a decade working with Relais & Châteaux properties and years living in Greece, Austria, and South Africa. Those experiences taught me that the best spaces don't just look good, they make you feel something. The Garden Chalet is where I put those ideas into practice. There's a coffee table book inside showing how this space came together, feel free to flip through. The Backyard This is where guests tend to linger. You'll find comfortable seating areas, a firepit for cool evenings, a hot tub tucked among the greenery, and a landscaped waterfall that sets the tone the moment you arrive. It's part Mediterranean courtyard, part Pacific Northwest retreat. Guests often describe it as an unexpected oasis. One guest from Germany told me the jasmine climbing our old tree stump reminded her of June in Sicily, the scent hit her the moment she stepped out of her car. That's the kind of detail I design for: not just how a space looks, but how it makes you feel. The Wine Journey On your console table, you'll notice a curated display of wine glasses, each one representing a different tasting room at the Vancouver Waterfront, just a 10-minute drive away. Inside each glass you'll find a complimentary 2-for-1 tasting voucher. Choose your own adventure and explore some of Washington's best wines. It's a small thing, but it's the kind of detail that turns a trip into a memory. Location The Garden Chalet is tucked in a quiet Vancouver, WA neighborhood with easy access to both the Vancouver Waterfront and Portland. You're close to restaurants, hiking, wine country, and the energy of the city, but when you come home, it feels like you've left it all behind. Dedicated parking leads directly to your private entrance. No shared hallways, no awkward encounters, just your own space to come and go as you please. A Note from Your Host I take pride in this place. Hosting isn't a side hustle for me, it's an extension of how I think about design, comfort, and what makes a space feel like a genuine getaway. If you need anything during your stay, I'm nearby. If you want complete privacy, you'll have it. I hope the Garden Chalet feels less like a rental and more like somewhere you'd actually want to come back to.

It was very clean and cozy. Lots of blankets provided so even though it was winter we always felt warm enough. The backyard was lovely and a great place to spend the evening looking out at stars. Dieter was a very friendly and helpful host.
So beautifully appointed outside and in!
Dieter thought of every possible need for an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable stay.
The yard is definitely an oasis and the Chalet possessed the ambiance of an upscale boutique hotel!
I will definitely stay here again when I come back!

Everything about this property and the owner exceeded my expectations which were already pretty high! It's a beautiful retreat atmosphere and the owner has a wonderful heart for design both in the home and in the landscaping. I cannot say enough good things about my experience here and plan to return as often as I can!
The property is fantastic! When driving in, the neighborhood does not impress. But when you go through the gate into the property, it is truly an oasis. Just a short drive from the city, which in the past we have found to be a little loud to stay in. But the Oasis was quiet and peaceful. Gardens, hot tub, babbling water feature...all so clean and restful. Spotlessly clean inside and out. Trouble with the TV was addressed quickly and personally by Dieter, who was a quiet host. Only saw him when we asked for help. Wonderful stay.
Dieter’s place is absolutely lovely— looks just like the photos! He has thought of everything to make the stay a cozy one—coffee, slippers, robes, to name a few. The design of the space is so beautifully curated and thoughtfully planned, you can tell a lot of care went into it. The garden is a gorgeous oasis right at your doorstep with a hot tub to enjoy it from. Communication with Dieter is thorough and thoughtful. I highly recommend this place and hope to stay again soon!
The property was exactly as represented but better! The unit was very clean, but did not smell like cleaning agents. The various sitting areas around the property were divine, we spent a couple of hours every morning on the front porch. The sectional was super comfy and enabled 4 of us to dine outside. The spa was great, always hot and clean! We stayed 2 weeks and by the second week realized there are no noises in the house..no squeaking doors, cabinets are all soft close, owner above was super quiet, just the most peaceful spot inside and outside. Appreciated having the basic spices along with salt, pepper and napkins provided. We will definitely stay here again when in Vancouver! .
The host remodeled this home, guest quarters & spacious garden area in Mediterranean style. Everything, from the decor to the amenities to the amazing back garden were exceptional -- the pictures on the listing illustrate what's available and the landscaping, water feature and cozy outdoor seating areas are sublime. The host, Dieter, is a designer, and it shows. Well equipped kitchen & amenities such as robes are included. Our communications were easy and Dieter accommodated my request to leave my car at the property before check-in time on the day I arrived. I was in Vancouver to visit someone but visitors to Portland should also consider this property. A photo book documents the transformation from a ho-hum property to a little Mediterranean oasis in the city. Thanks, Dieter, for providing such a special place for my stay.
My stay at Dieter’s property was lovely! From the moment I arrived I could tell the neighborhood was a quiet residential area. Short drive from PDX and easy commute to downtown Portland, and the Columbia River Gorge- does it get any better than that? He provided a Nespresso machine for morning coffee with all the fixings, robes for use with the wonderful hot tub, slippers, and most everything needed to cook. There were also waters available as well as a few little snacks. The TVs are used by Chromecast which worked well for streaming movies, shows, and music. Dieter was great at communicating in a professional and timely manner. I think what I enjoyed the most was relaxing in the back garden area- it really feels like a private oasis. There are string lights that turn on automatically when the sun starts setting, and beautifully illuminate the area. A few different seating areas depending on whether you want to relax steps away from the door, or a little closer to the waterfall to add the sound of trickling water to the peaceful ambiance. My goal with my stay was relaxation and that was definitely achieved with Dieter’s hospitality. I hope I am able to return soon!
I was in town for a short time on a visit. I found the the mini apartment to be charming and perfect for our stay. I'd stay there again on my next visit to Vancouver.
