Tropical Lowlands Holiday Packages
This vast region is filled with opportunities to get close to nature, with national parks, clear lagoons, rushing rivers and remote, untouched jungle wilderness.
The hot and humid Tropical Lowlands cover most of Bolivia and are home to a variety of ecosystems and wildlife. Trek through scenic national parks and spot jaguars, pumas, tapirs and rare bird species. Swim in deep lagoons and explore little-visited towns.
This vast area can be divided into the regions of Santa Cruz, Beni and Pando. The city of Santa Cruz is the biggest in the area. Despite its international airport opening up this side of Bolivia to more visitors, the city is still far from a hot spot for western tourists, but it is a cosmopolitan place. Discover its colonial buildings, museums, restaurants and nightlife and a historic centre with cathedral.
Venture to wildlife reserves outside the city. The extremely remote Kaa-Iya del Gran Chaco National Park is famous for its jaguars, tapirs and pumas. More accessible is the 35,000-acre (14,000-hectare) Lomas de Arena, a spectacular desert surrounded by tropical forest, ideal for trekking and bird watching.
Discover the dynamic, modern city of Trinidad in the Beni region. Inspect the colonial architecture and large, green main square before setting out to explore the surrounding region, which is heavily forested and intersected by large rivers.
A wide choice of river tours can be arranged from Trinidad. Find the popular lagoon of Laguna Suárez just outside the city centre. Swim and relax before eating at a restaurant at the lagoon’s edge. Another popular nearby attraction is the Parque Pantanal (Wetlands Park). Survey native wildlife such as tapirs and rheas.
Adventurer seekers will want to head for the untouched Pando region. Isolated, densely forested and forgotten by tourism, this region is easy to overlook. Discover the Manuripi Amazonian Wildlife National Reserve, home to pumas, jaguars and various kinds of birds and lizards. For something even more off the main tourist track, try the town of Cobija. Go fishing and trekking in truly wild nature where few tourists go.
To get to the Tropical Lowlands, fly into Viru-Viru International Airport or Aeropuerto El Trompillo in Santa Cruz. Buses will connect you between the major centers, while private tours or transport will help you access the more remote locations in the region.
