The grounds are beautifully maintained with native plants, lots of walking trails which are inviting to so much wildlife including toucans, orenpendula, parrots, macaws, red eyed tree frogs and so much more. Tortuguero National Park is a short walk away and I went there often. But I love the tours that Mawamba offers, kayak tours, birding tours, canal tours and an enjoyable floating restaurant. Rather than hop around all over Costa Rica, I spent nearly a week, and I’m glad I did. The staff is very accommodating, the food is good and the guides area amazingly skilled in the history of the area, the natural heritage and spotting wildlife. I’m very impressed and I will definitely return. The room was clean and convenient. We spent a lot of time at the pool with the kids, they loved it, especially when the monkeys and toucans were hanging out in the trees. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The only downside we found was the transportation between the hotel and Tortuguero town. There is a boat provided for the hotel every few hours, but it isn't often enough to be convenient. The other option is to take a taxi boat, but at $4/person it gets a bit expensive for a round trip for a family of 4\. They could also do a better job of making sure their boat drivers look for you when you reserve a space on their boat. When we first arrived, we had scheduled a ride on the boat and they just told us to be at the main dock in Tortuguero 10 minutes in advance. We expected them to have a sign or at least call out our names or the name of the lodge. That didn't happen and the docks are busy so we had no idea which boat to get on. We ended up missing the boat.
