For many, Timrå may be synonymous with hockey, but Norrland's 15th largest urban area also offers various outdoor activities.
Travellers to Timrå usually come in search of nature. The municipality has a large and varied selection of exercise trails for hikers as well as cyclists and skiers, plus a great a variety of swimming, both inland and in the sea - and as if that wasn't enough, there's also the Premier Division hockey. All of this lies just 10 km from the Sundsvall-Timrå Airport, with regular flights from Stockholm and other cities.
Timrå has historically been characterised by its industry, which included paper mills, sawmills and sulphite plants. The name used to be spelt Timmeradh, which likely meant “dovetailed construction.” There are few traces of that industrial past left today however.
One of the few signs that does still exist is the Lögdö Plant, a well-preserved ironworks facility that was active from 1685 to 1878. There is a municipal cultural reserve that preserves the mill's exciting old industrial buildings, including a mansion, a farm, a bakery and a chapel.
For hockey enthusiasts, a trip to Timrå should of course include a visit to the NHK Arena to watch Timrå IK play. The team plays in the Swedish Premier Division for hockey and has previously played in the SHL.
A weekend trip to Timrå has much to offer for nature lovers. No matter what season you plan your trip to Timrå, there are plenty of outdoor activities available. After your visit to Lögdö you can fish in the ponds and lakes in the Lögdö wilderness, follow one of the trails along the pastures, or bathe in the Lögdö Lake.
Ljustorp is another popular destination for the outdoor enthusiast. Here you will find a beautiful landscape to explore between two mountain ridges. Walk between the animal enclosures, through pastures and over the mountains, where you will find a breathtaking view that extends for dozens of kilometres. You can also fish in the Ljustorpsån river and swim in Röjesjön Lake.
Adventurous travellers will enjoy a visit to Skönviksbacken, where skiing and snowboarding are on offer in the winter. Or if you come in the summer, Skönvik Bicycle Park is the perfect place to get your adrenaline pumping. In addition to the slopes and bike park, there are snowmobile and cross country ski trails.
You’ll also find jogging tracks at Fager Beach, Söråkers Beach, Bergeforsens Sports Complex and Timrå Sports Complex. The latter two offer skiing tracks in the winter as well. Fishing enthusiasts will also find good fishing in Indalsälven, while a total of eleven beaches beckon swimmers in the summer. Thanks to the Sundsvall-Timrå Airport, the natural wonders of Norrland are never far away.
