As the third oldest settlement in Australia, and originally set up as a convict colony, there’s plenty of history at Port Macquarie. Dating back to 1821 it was founded at the mouth of the Hastings river- the isolated location being perfect for a kind of open prison. But as settlement picked up in Australia through the 1830s, Port Macquarie became less isolated and transformed from a jail into a prosperous town. These days visitors willingly come here, with its pristine rivers and lakes, stunning beaches and excellent water sports options being a big draw. Little of the original settlement remains and it’s hard to imagine that there was ever a time when men were held here against their will, such is the natural beauty all around.
