For travellers who like a touch of elegance and style, Milan has to be the city of choice. The international judge, jury and executioner of fashion and design is also a city that likes to work and, fortunately for you, play hard. Beauty and power spiral in endless webs of desire throughout the city, nowhere more so than in the grand Gothic cathedral, the Duomo, that once formed the elegant centre of the Imperial Roman capital. Art collections, unmissable shopping opportunities, a dazzling nightlife, the unique chance to experience opera at La Scala, the finest foods of Lombardy and two world-class football grounds will vie for your attention. But, whatever you choose to do make sure you do it with style.
Piazza del Duomo - The heart of Milan is the busy square that houses the world's largest Gothic cathedral. Begun in the 14th century the Duomo took 500 years to complete and every day spent on it can be seen today in all its brilliance.
South of the Piazza del Duomo - The busy shopping street of Via Torino may well lose you for quite some time, make sure to stop for a bite to eat in one of the fine restaurants nearby too.
North of the Piazza del Duomo - The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II here is nearly as iconic a sight as the Duomo itself and the Piazza dei Mercanti is surrounded by a number of fine palaces to explore. For a night at the opera there can be nowhere better than La Scala.
Brera - This district is the city’s arty quarter with small galleries and shops to browse in. Don’t expect humble garretts, though, this is art with money behind it.
Giardini Pubblici - The oldest public gardens of the city is the perfect place to escape from the crowds and reflect on all that you have seen (and, perhaps, bought). More art galleries (this time modern) lie in wait nearby.
Things to See in Milan
The best way to take in all that Milan has to offer is to take a tour. There are numerous tours available - ranging from walking to Segway, and even including a tour by Fiat 500. Make sure you catch the artistic delights that the galleries contain, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, and don’t miss the iconic sight of the Duomo.
Why not learn more about the delicious cuisine of Lombardy on a food tour of the Brera district. Football fans can explore San Siro and Casa Milan on a tour of the stadiums meanwhile those who’d rather browse the boutiques are not short of some classy retail therapy opportunities.
