Home to some of the country’s best known vineyards, McLaren Vale is a popular destination for visitors looking to sample some local tipples. Spend a weekend exploring the area’s wineries, tasting local produce and enjoying the beautiful landscape.
McLaren Vale – The main settlement in the area, McLaren Vale is a hub for the region’s wine industry. The perfect place to start your tour of the local vineyards, the town also offers a farmers’ market, a choice of galleries and selection of local shops.
Onkaparinga River National Park – Located just a few miles from McLaren Vale, the Onkaparinga River National Park boasts a wealth of hiking route, a diverse habitat and plenty of flora and fauna to explore. Trails are clearly marked, making it easy to navigate your way around the park. Other activities available in Onkaparinga include rock climbing, kayaking, fishing and cycling.
Clarendon – The historic town of Clarendon has been beautifully restored in recent years leaving its historic buildings in great condition and giving visitors a glimpse into how this fascinating region would have looked in the early days of Australia.
Reynella – Like Clarendon, Reynella has a rich history and a wealth of period buildings. Visit the Crown Inn Hotel built in 1853, Cellar No.1, Australia’s oldest working cellar which first opened its doors in 1845, and the Reynella Grist Mill which is known to have been operational before 1853.
The wineries are the main attraction of McLaren Vale. With many vineyards tracing their histories back over a hundred years, there are plenty of fascinating stories to explore. Leave at least a few days to explore the vineyards and cellar doors. You’ll need to hire a car to see all of the area properly, with many vineyards difficult to reach by public transport. You can also visit the historic buildings in Reynella and Clarendon and see the diverse flora and fauna in the Onkaparinga River National Park.
Spend your time in McLaren Vale exploring the region’s outstanding vineyards. Many of the wineries in the area are small scale or family run, ensuring every cellar door is unique and distinctive. Historic sites can be found in many of the towns around McLaren Vale, with Clarendon and Reynella among the two best preserved settlements in the area.
