What to do in Haute-Vienne

Limoges Cathedral, standing proud upon its hill on the banks of the Vienne River, was a labor lasting 600 years for city residents. Construction began in 1273 and ended in the late 19th century, when the nave was finally connected to the church’s bell tower on foundations first created in Roman times. Despite its extended construction history, the church stands as a beautiful example of Gothic architecture, one of few south of the Loire. Approach from the river to see it rise above the trees or wander here through the Old Town.

The Church of St.-Michel-des-Lions, with its 200 foot tall (65 meter) bell tower, is a splendid example of Limousin religious architecture. Let the sight of the peaked tower guide you as you wander through the streets until you arrive at the cobbled square before the entrance.

Given the worldwide reputation of Limoges porcelain, it is no surprise that the city’s Musée National Adrien Dubouché has one of the world’s most extensive collections. Containing over 12,000 examples of porcelain from Limoges alone and thousands of pieces from Europe, Asia, and all around the world, this museum is a must for lovers of porcelain and those who want to learn about it. Tucked behind the Cathedral of Limoges, the Jardin de l’Évêche is a delightful surprise. The property of the Bishop of Limoges before its 1910 purchase by the city, the park’s 5 acres (2 hectares) are perfect for resting, walking and learning about the plants of the Haute-Vienne region. Relax in the shade of a local oak as you look out at the river and city.
