Church on a field, Glendalough, Ireland
Glendalough is home to one of the most important monastic sites in Ireland. This Christian monastic settlement was founded in the 6th century. Most of the buildings that survive today date from the 10th through 12th centuries, despite attacks by Vikings over the years.

The round tower in the background was built between the year 900 and 1200 AD. It is 100 ft high and had six floors. The entry door is almost 12 feet off the ground and was presumably reached by means of a movable ladder which those inside could pull up after them to prevent an enemy from entering. Round towers were the bell towers of early monasteries and were used to summon monks to prayer. #History
