Fraser Coast Attractions

A diverse region in Queensland, the Fraser Coast’s changing landscapes include rugged beauty, quaint seaside towns and sweeping bays. With a number of national parks to visit, sugar cane plantations supporting country towns and some charming off shore destinations too, there’s plenty to see and do along this stretch of coast. Visit small cities like Hervey Bay, Maryborough and Rainbow Beach, soaking up the relaxing vibes or take a boat out on the water for another perspective.

Areas & Neighbourhoods on the Fraser Coast

Hervey Beach - A centre for whale watching, this thriving community is also a gateway to Fraser Island and the Great Barrier Reef.

Maryborough - With its traditional Queensland architecture and wide tree-lined streets, this is one of the prettiest and most historic destinations in the whole state. Well worth a visit.

Rainbow Beach - A charming coastal village that gives great access to some of the most incredible natural destinations in the country, including Tin Can Bay. The village is so called after the coloured sands on its beach.

Fraser Island - The largest sand island in the world and a World Heritage Site, Fraser Island is very popular with travellers looking for a wild and natural experience.

The Great Barrier Reef - A vast formation of rocky outcrops, coral formations and stunning sea life, this is one of the most unique natural attractions on the planet.

Things to See on the Fraser Coast

Catch the boat over to Fraser Island, where you can discover vast uninterrupted sandy beaches or hang out on the shores of Lake Wabby. Visit the original site of Maryborough, known as Wide Bay Village or enjoy a picnic at the Queens Park waterfall. The port of Maryborough contains the remnants of the original wharf, when this was the spot people entered Australia for the first time and mining goods departed around the world. The region also has some excellent wineries where you can go to sample the goods. And there are some superb national parks, including Mudlo and the Wongi State Forest.

Things to Do on the Fraser Coast

Hervey Bay is well known for its whale watching, so catch a boat out and try and get a glimpse of these magnificent creatures. Back on dry land, head to the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum to learn more about local history. The Great Sandy National Park on Fraser Island is covered in huge sand dunes and subtropical rainforest. Discover for yourself why it has been designated a World Heritage Site. There are also a number of theme and water parks along the coast, including Wetside where you can go to cool off and have some fun on hot days. Or for a different type of experience involving water, wander the remaining wetlands in Maryborough at the Fay Smith Park.
