Taveuni: Fiji’s Garden Island
Taveuni is the third-largest island in Fiji and the tip of a volcano that rises out of the Pacific. Inhabited by some 9,000 people who will welcome you with open arms and legendary hospitality, Taveuni is also home to a thick rainforest and the clearest water with thriving reefs. Tropical wildflowers, gnarled mangroves and abundant wildlife have earned Taveuni its nickname, The Garden Island of Fiji.
Your Stay on Taveuni
Nature abounds on Taveuni, so your stay on the island could be filled with excitement and adventure. The coral reefs off Taveuni’s coast are home to some of the world’s best dive sites, where vast schools of rainbow-coloured fish lure larger predators.
Inland lies Fiji’s only UNESCO-listed national park, Bouma National Park, which teems with enormous ferns, waterfalls and the chatter of native birds. Though the last eruption on Taveuni occurred some 500 years ago, the volcano’s presence is still felt here. Volcanic rocks form a rugged coastline where geysers blow great puffs of ocean mist high into the air.
Hotels in Taveuni
Taveuni’s appeal lies in its natural beauty, lack of crowds and many opportunities for eco-pursuits, and the island’s hotels know this only too well. A small yet perfectly balanced selection of accommodation options range from comfortable no-frills two-star hostels to elegant five-star resorts complete with spas. Whatever your budget, waterfront real estate is standard, with cabins overlooking the soft sandy beaches, and each place to stay promising a wealth of facilities including dive centres and overland tours.
Taveuni: an Eco-Tourist’s Dream
Back to nature is the name of the game on Taveuni, where you can explore the crystal-clear underwater world by snorkel or scuba, or hike Fiji’s second-highest summit, Mount Uluigalau. Wander through mist-shrouded rainforests in search of over 100 tropical bird species, clamber up to Lake Tagimaucia, a volcanic crater lake set 2,600 feet up, or cool off under the famous Bouma Waterfalls, where you can take a refreshing dip in natural swimming pools.
