The area itself is remote and no hiking trails available apart from one on the other side of the river, along the river all the way to the cable car, but it is not used a lot so felt un-used for years with bear traps along the way and very overgrown, so we retreated after a while. Good bus connections to other places but you might need to consider hiring a car. The ryokan has private onsens which was excellent as I have several tattoos and was not allowed in other public places. Food at ryokan was very good and a highlight of the stay. It's about half way between Matsumoto and Takayama - 1.5 hrs in each direction, so also not a fast trip. It's an old hotel (I think they plan on renovating soon), with nice, helpful staff, large room, small, hard beds, and incredible meals. I you want to experience a more rural setting in the alps, this is a good place to stop for a night.
