This theatre presents its own as well as visiting productions and has a cinema and a busy programme of workshops and other events.

The Stephen Joseph Theatre has a diverse program of drama, comedy and music. Considered a gem of art deco architecture, the venue is a former Odeon cinema built in 1936 and is now home to a theatre-in-the-round founded in 1955 by theatrical pioneer Stephen Joseph. The theatre has changed venues several times before settling at its present location in 1996.

The year-round program at the Stephen Joseph Theatre includes comedies and dramas by visiting theatre groups, and plays and musicals by well-known playwrights including the theatre’s former artistic director, Alan Ayckbourn. There is also a busy program of music, ranging from popular to classical.

See a performance in the main auditorium, The Round, which has a central stage with 400 seats all around it, creating an intimate atmosphere. A second endstage auditorium, the McCarthy, has a 165-seat capacity and doubles as a cinema. A small exhibition space provides a place for local artists to showcase their talent.

Pre- or post-event drinks are available at the theatre’s bar. Save time standing in line during the interval by pre-ordering your drinks. Stop by the theatre’s shop to browse artisanal goods such as ceramics, chocolates, jewelry and glassware.

Check the theatre’s schedule for events, which include meet-and-greets with performers after a show. Note that the theatre is also active in involving the community with its OutReach program that provides interactive workshops for everyone from babies to people with limited mobility.

Tickets for the Stephen Joseph Theatre are sold online via the theatre’s official website and in person at the box office. The theatre is just a few minutes’ walk from the center of Scarborough, and directly opposite the railway station. Drivers can use one of several metered car parks nearby. Attractions in the area include Scarborough Art Gallery and the Rotunda Museum.
