The Riva is a broad and buzzing, palm-lined esplanade with numerous lively bars and cafés, as well as oceanfront benches. It’s a popular gathering spot during the day and there is always something happening here at night too. Listen to live music in a bar, watch street performers put on a show or observe the boats coming and going in the harbour while you enjoy a cup of coffee. This oceanfront avenue has been in existence since Diocletian’s Palace was first built, roughly 1,700 years ago. It was overhauled in 2005 and given a new sleek design. The remodel divided local opinion, with some praising the modern look and others lamenting its loss of character. Take a walk here and decide for yourself. Amble along the length of the Riva, which extends 820 feet (250 metres). Be sure to see the Bronze Gate, which leads into the Roman quarters of the old fortress of Diocletian’s Palace. Follow the promenade westward and note the number of people socializing in the adjoining coffee shops and bars. Drinking coffee and chatting is a way of life in Split and locals frequently gather here on the Riva, which functions as the social hub of the city. If you want to rest, take a seat on an oceanfront bench or sun lounger, some of which are shaded by overhanging palm fronds. While sitting on these, look out over the water and watch the vessels mooring in the nearby harbour. In this busy harbour you’re likely to see everything from cruise ships to small fishing boats pulling into port. Come back at night to experience the area after dark when the energy rises. Try fresh seafood dishes in a restaurant or join local revellers in toasting the day’s end with a cooling drink in one of the lively bars. The official name of the promenade is Obala hrvatskog narodnog preporoda (Quay of the Croatian National Revival) but it is commonly known as the Riva. (272 reviews) I stayed in one of several ground floor (actually semi-basement) rooms that opened directly off the relatively quiet street. Noise was a major issue. This was for three reasons: (1) a window facing street and hidden outside by shutters and inside by curtains behind desk was left ajar. Closing it required moving desk, and a shorter person would have needed to stand on a chair. (2) Noise travelled from floor above easily - everything from footsteps to phone conversation was audible at 2am. (3) During heavy rain, the gutters somehow ran internally above the bathroom ceiling creating an echo chamber of dripping water noises! The front desk was not open for all of the advertised hours. I only stayed because I got three nights for price of two and location was conveniently close to the old town but not on busiest strips. (84 reviews) Excellent hotel. I plan to return. I recommend it! The quality of the building is very good. The room we had (junior suite) was well laid out. The bathroom was very nice. Only downside was that it did not have a bathtub; it was a shower only. But it was a nice shower. There is a hot tub and sauna that is bookable. We did that and enjoyed it. The staff are very professional and nice. They speak fluent English. In particular, I want to give recognition to the hard working Diana in the restaurant. The breakfasts every day were very helpful. Plenty of options. We always ate a big breakfast to fuel our long days of Croatia exploration. There is a rooftop cafe! The only downside of this hotel is its location. It is fine and I have no problem with it. However, it is not "walkable" for some people. For me, no problem. We walked to Diocletian's Palace in about 20 -- 25 minutes. There are two short turns and then a main street takes you directly to the old part of the city. The advantage of the hotel location is also that it's easy to take a car into town or out of town. It's a \~$10 Uber ride to the ferry or Palace. It's also easy to get onto the road and towards places outside of Split, like the Fortress or onwards to Trogir, etc. Overall, I actually think the location is decent. One side of the hotel faces a busy road, so perhaps choose the other side if that's an issue for you. We faced the road but found it to be quiet at night.
