Agrilos House - Amazing sea view - Sleeps 4

Summary:
Enjoy the tranquility and unspoilt nature of Mirsini, a village far from the tourist crowds, high up in the mountains but ever so close to the sea. A recently renovated house offering great sea and mountain views from its large terrace. It has two double bedrooms, kitchen, living room and bathroom with shower. It is also possible to rent the ground floor apartment with an additional double bed.

The Space:
Enjoy your holiday in an authentic Cretan village, away from tourist crowds! The house offers amazing sea and mountain views. It benefits from a large terrace with a large umbrella for shade and outdoor furniture. The terrace is the main entrance to the large living room with open plan kitchen, lounge sofa, dinner table and fireplace. There is a modern bathroom with shower and washing machine, a master bedroom with direct access to the terrace and a second double bedroom with windowed access to the terrace.
The ground floor is secluded by olive trees and has a small balcony with outdoor furniture. There is a living room with open plan kitchen, a double bedroom with ample storage and a bathroom with shower. This can be rented separately.

Guest Access:
During your stay you will have access to the top floor house with its own private terrace! The house is easily accessible from the village main street. It is located on a quiet side street.

On your arrival you will find complimentary seasonal fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, cherries, watermelons etc) from the owner's own gardens, raki (local spirit) and wine (also produced by the owner). The olive oil for your cooking is also available for free (our own olive oil).

The Neighborhood:
Eastern Crete

Eastern Crete, (east from Aghios Nikolaos) is the most authentic and unspoilt region of Crete since it is not touristically developed. It is the region that people from large Cretan cities (Heraklion, Chania) choose for their own relaxing vacations. Eastern Crete is mostly mountainous and the driving routes are winding and scenic, offering great views over wild mountains and the sea. In fact the whole route from Aghios Nikolaos to Sitia is considered on the best scenic drives in Greece. In this region you will meet writers and music composers who find inspiration in the sea/mountain views and the authentic village people.

An introduction to Mirsini village

Mirsini is a traditional Cretan village, unspoilt by tourism. It was incorporated during the Minoan period in the territory of the major Minoan city of Mochlos. It is located on Crete's northern main route, on the road from Agios Nikolaos to Sitia, 45 km from Agios Nikolaos and 23 km from Sitia at an altitude of 330 meters overlooking the gulf of Mirabello. It is famous for its great views (the village is west facing), its tranquility, the good food, wine and raki and for its hospitable and friendly residents. The village is surrounded by olive groves, fruit plantations, steep mountains and deep ravines.

Restaurants in Mirsini

Kathodon: a beautiful and cosy terrace within walking distance from the house. It serves traditional dishes and offers spectacular sea views. Another great restaurant is located in the neighbouring village of Mouliana, just 5 minutes drive from the house (it is open all year round during lunch and dinner hours).

Shopping

There is a small shop selling basic groceries in the village. For large supermarkets and a large wekkly fruit/vegetable market you will need to drive to Sitia town (30 min by car). If you prefer to avoid shopping we can stock the kitchen for you with all items you may need. The nearest pharmacy is located in the neighbouring village of Tourloti (5 minutes drive).

Hiking

If you prefer running water, lush vegetation and waterfalls, the entrance of Richtis gorge is a 15 minute drive by car, close to the nearby village of Exo Mouliana. The trail winds down the ravine for 4km passing from old bridges and abondoned watermills, through thick vegetation before reaching the sea at Richtis beach.
If you choose to explore the mountains and the amazing views you can start from the nearby village of Lastros and head towards the chapel of Saint John and Kapsas peak or towards Saint Nikitas (5km round trip).

Beaches

The closest beach is in the village of Mochlos approximately 15min by car. The nearest large sandy beach is Tholos, at a distance of 20km towards Aghios Nikolaos. Sitia sandy beach is 23km drive from the house. There are various other great options available. We will provide information about the best beaches in the region.

Sitia town

It is the nearest town (at 23km from the house) with a large sandy beach, supermarkets, a weekly farmer's market and a hospital.

For history and archaeology enthusiasts, Sitia's archeological museum display's exhibits dating back to the Neolithic era in 3,500 BC while the medieval fortress of Kazarma, situated at the top of Sitia is a reminder of the town's medieval past. Furthermore, the folklore museum exhibits items from the past century such as weavings, woodcuts and other everyday life items.

During the evening you can visit one of the numerous small restaurants ("Rakadika") situated along the town's fishing port, which serve delicious variety plates along with Cretan spirit "Raki". And if you are up to it you can continue your night out until the early morning hours in one of the local bars and clubs.

Getting Around:
You will need to rent a car in order to fully enjoy what the region has to offer. For travel plans:
The main access to Crete is through Heraklion (about 1.30 hours distance) with an international airport and port. There are scheduled flights throughout the year from Athens and various European airports as well as charter flights from April till October while the port offers connection to Athens and Aegean islands.
The newly constructed Sitia airport is served with scheduled flights from Athens and charter flights from Europe in the summer months. The airport also offers scheduled flights to the nearby islands of Kasos and Karpathos.

Interaction with Guests:
We will greet you and provide a tour of the house. If you have any need or require information (beaches, historical sites, restaurants, hiking routes etc) you can always contact us at any time! We can stock the fridge and storage with any groceries you require. Just provide us with a list!

6 Nights in Mirsini
We had a wonderful time at Agilos house, it was very comfortable gave us a good base for exploring the east of Crete. Pantilis was excellent at answering any questions I had and gave us lots of useful local information. Nikos the owner was wonderfully generous with the welcome basket of goodies and it was a pleasure to meet him and his family-Cretes best asset - its people. A car is recommended if staying here as it is in the mountains and that means a great spot to watch the sunset. Enjoy as we did.

Awesome house in a lovely hillside village
The house is fantastic and we spent many an evening watching the sunset on the patio enjoying the view and drinking some of the owners wine. Beautifully appointed house. The owner has amazing welcome gifts of wine, raki biscuits, olive oil, olives and a fridge full of fruit and vege. You will not be disappointed. If anything the photo do not do justice. It is great.

Paradise!
This was so amazingly lovely -- the dream of a Greek island house. We were there two weeks ago. The views, down to the sea and islands, across to high mountains and white towns, were so beautiful that we kept saying, "Do you believe this?" The house itself is beautifully appointed; everything one could want, including a terrace from which one can look and look at the views. We would go down to the seaside town of Mochlos and have lunch at one of the tavernas perched at the edge of the water, and look across to an island where one can see excavations of a Minoan settlement. Everything was beautifully arranged and coordinated with the utmost care. On arriving, Nikos -- the owner of the house -- left us a basket filled with cookies from his wife's bakery, olive oil, raki -- and in the refrigerator, vegetables that he himself grows -- cucumbers, tomatoes, cut up prickly pear -- I feel as though I should stop because too many superlatives might not sound believable. Trust me -- it's true. Thank you, Pantelis and Nikos. It was one of the all-time great weeks. I'd go back in a minute!

A superb holiday house.
Our flight was delayed, and we did not arrive until after 11.00pm, but Nikos was still there to greet us. He is a delightful man, and his attention far exceeded the traditional Cretan welcome. He could not have been more hospitable, friendly and helpful, and we thank him very much. He says, modestly, that his English is not very good; his English is very good ! This house is beautiful. It is a very thoughtful and tasteful conversion of his parents' village home, and sits high above the road, with spectacular views - from the large terrace - of the Gulf of Mirabello, and the coastal village of Mourtos down below. Eat freshly caught fish there, at one of the tavernas right on the water's edge. The mountains rise behind the village, and the sunsets are spectacular. There is everything in this house that you could possibly need - it is superbly equipped, and tastefully furnished and decorated. Nikos's welcome basket contained a spectacular collection of his own produce, including wine, olive oil, raki, sundried tomatoes, olive paste, etc, and a selection of biscuits from his wife's patisserie in Sitea. The fridge had boxes of fresh fruit, tomatoes and courgettes, and we could not have enjoyed them all more than we did...fresh grapes and figs for breakfast, looking out over that wonderful view - what could be better ! There is a lovely village taverna just a minute's walk from the house, and others (which we did not try) in neighbouring villages. There are gorges to walk, beaches to find, monasteries and Minoan sites to visit. You will never run out of 'things to do' if you stay here. We cannot recommend Agrilos Sea View House highly enough - book it for next year; you will not be disappointed. Nikos's friend Pantelis, in Athens, will make your arrangements until you arrive, when Nikos will take over.

Traumhafter Ausblick
