The best time to visit the Simpson Desert is during the cooler months, specifically from May to September.During this period, the daytime temperatures are more pleasant, typically ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, making outdoor activities like exploring the dunes and wildlife spotting much more comfortable. The nights are cool, often dropping to single digits, so you'll need warm layers. This season also generally sees less rainfall, which is crucial for navigating the desert's unsealed tracks. For those planning an adventurous trip, perhaps a self-drive expedition or a guided tour across the desert, these months offer the most favourable conditions. The reduced heat stress makes long days of driving or hiking more enjoyable, and the lower chance of rain means tracks are less likely to be closed due to flooding.
