"Came in the off season, and it was a complete bait and switch. Actual hotel was closed (including pool and restaurant (so no breakfast)). Placed us next door in tiny apartments. Manager gave us the key and left the property. First room had a broken toilet seat so moved us to another one. Staff spoke no English and didn’t understand that we need password for WiFi. Blanket on bed was wet. We were supposed to stay 2 nights but left the next morning."

Phāea Cretan Malia, a Member of Design Hotels

8/10 Good

"Really nice place to go and relax – was a bit caught out by the number of young families there (09.07.26-16.07.26), not really an issue (and we've had a family so know what it is like), but was hoping for a little more quiet, particularly regarding the family above our room!! We'll deffo go back, but 2 or 3 weeks earlier to hopefully avoid the families. Restaurants were excellent, the food was very very good (particularly Mouries) especially when compared to a restaurant in Malia Old Town – and very competitive when you take into account you need a taxi in and out of Malia old town. All restaurant staff were very attentive and liked to chat, so relaxed and very friendly. We had a swim up bungalow, worth the extra for that, you get a really nice private space for relaxing after a hard day on the beach! The beach was clean and kept very tidy (in fact, it wont a Blue Flag award while we were there). The sea was amazingly warm, probably one of the warmest seas I've been in on all my travels. The beach guy and the Beach Shack staff worked really hard and nothing was too much trouble for them – drinks were served very quickly, even at the furthest part of the beach from the bar. Overall, very nice place to go and relax."

I am an average size person and even I found it difficult to shower without flooding the floor. But that was a minor inconvenience. The staff were lovely and extremely helpful. We loved Marina who was working in the bar in the evening. She was so friendly and entertaining. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the lady who served the pool bar, but she was also very pleasant and friendly. The food was very good and there was plenty of it. The waiting staff were a little over keen to clear the tables but we soon got used to that. I highly recommend this as a great hotel for families. We are a couple but found that it was OK for us. We also liked the fact that we could have all inclusive which was well worth the price that we paid. I especially loved the terrace area outside the main party of the hotel where we sat in the evening, with a beautiful tree in the middle and tables and chairs all around just like an old Cretan village square."
