Shikoku

Travel to this island off the southern shores of Honshu to discover a sacred pilgrimage route amid natural splendours and one of Japan’s biggest street festivals.

Rugged hillsides spill down toward a dramatic coastline and the shimmering Pacific Ocean on Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s main islands. Shikoku’s name means four (shi) regions (koku), a reference to the island’s four historical areas from the country’s feudal era. Visit islands and walk between temples established by revered Buddhist monk Kōbō Daishi. Discover the beaches, mountains, rivers and valleys that make up an impressive natural landscape.

Impressive art and some of Japan’s finest udon noodle bars beckon you to the Kagawa prefecture. Admire the beauty of Ritsurin Garden, sample Sanuki noodles and learn about ancient folk traditions at Shikoku Village in Takamatsu. The city is the gateway to islands in the Seto Inland Sea, visible from the top of Mount Yashima. Browse the galleries on Naoshima and tour olive groves on Shōdo Island.

Kagawa is also a starting point for the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Created by Kōbō Daishi over 1,200 years ago, it’s a peaceful trail that travels for 746 miles (1,200 kilometres) through unblemished countryside and pretty rural towns. Major highlights include the Ishiteji Temple and Ryozenji Temple.

Dabble in thrill-seeking watersports and be part of a huge dance festival in Tokushima prefecture. Flamboyant dancers move to the beat of flutes, gongs and taiko drums during August’s Awa Odori Festival in Tokushima City. Join a river rafting trip in the Iya Valley and hike to the summit of Mount Tsurugi. Observe whirlpools in Naruto and surf big breaks at Kaifu Point.

Camp on the banks of the Shimanto River and marvel at the UNESCO-listed Muroto coastline in Kochi prefecture. Explore the ruins of 400-year-old Kochi Castle and dine on regional delicacies at Hirome Market in Kochi City. Quaint towns and vibrant cities encompassed by mountain scenery define Ehime prefecture. Take the cable car to Matsuyama Castle, wander storybook streets in Uchiko and relax at Dogo Onsen hot springs.

Three modern bridges provide excellent road and rail connections between Shikoku and Honshu island. Book seats on the Seto Sunrise overnight train, complete with showers and vending machines, from Tokyo to Takamatsu.
