This area is the heart of Shamakh and offers the most convenient access to local amenities and the starting points for many desert excursions. You'll find a selection of guesthouses and a few local eateries clustered around the central square, which is often a gathering point for residents. The main road through Shamakh, which connects it to the wider Wadi Rum region, passes directly through this central part, making it easy to navigate.

Couples looking for an authentic experience will appreciate staying in this central area. It allows for easy interaction with local culture and provides a relaxed base from which to explore the surrounding desert. Many desert tour operators also have their offices or meeting points within walking distance, simplifying arrangements for those iconic Wadi Rum adventures.

For those planning to spend most of their time exploring the desert, choosing a guesthouse just a short walk from the main square is ideal.

The best times to visit Shamakh are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) months.

These periods offer the most pleasant weather for exploring the area. You'll find comfortable temperatures, typically ranging from 20-28°C, which is ideal for outdoor activities like visiting archaeological sites or hiking in the surrounding landscapes. The skies are generally clear, providing excellent conditions for photography and enjoying the views.

For those interested in historical sites and outdoor exploration, both spring and autumn provide excellent conditions without the intense heat of summer or the cooler, sometimes rainy, days of winter.
