Beautiful Views from your front porch National Register Property Cable Office in Seward, Alaska, United States, is a building that served as a telegraph office that connected Seward with communications in the rest of the United States. The cable office was constructed in 1905 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps as part of the Washington–Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System (WAMCATS). Telegraph service from the lower states first connected to Valdez, Alaska. In summer 1905, submarine cable was extended from Valdez to Seward. The first message over the line was to A. C. Frost, president of the Alaska Central Railway, who was in Chicago: 'This first message transmitted over Alaska Cable connects Seward from this day to the great city of Chicago.' Among initial regular users of the telegraph line was the local newspaper, the Seward Daily Gateway. In August 1905, owner Frank Ballaine began featuring the previous day's news from the Coterminous United States in his paper. Before the telegraph line, outside news arrived via steam ship days or weeks later. The office was operated by Army personnel. The front room of the building was open to the public who could send and receive messages. The central part of the ground floor served as the operator's station, while workers lived on the second floor. Service continued until an earthquake severed the line in 1934\. By that time, radio communication had been established by the Navy and the telegraph line was not replaced. The government retained ownership until 1961\. Since then, the building has served as a private residence and rented apartments. We are now offering lodging in this wonderful home. Completely renovated bathrooms, fresh interior paint and charming period touches throughout and a beautiful, historic exterior as well. The house is set up similar to a duplex, with the GOVT. CABLE OFFICE downstairs (2 bedroom/2 bath, kitchen, living room and a wonderful covered porch. The upstairs is the original lodging with a completely separate entrance. This is a 2 bedroom/1 bath. This is referred to as the TELEGRAPH HOUSE QUARTERS (also on VRBO). Both have some wonderful views and a 1905 historic feel. You may rent both the top and bottom (depending on availability) or try both on different occasions! Walking distance to the Sealife Center, dining and shopping and the waterfront. You'll love the location, the parking and the views right from your front porch! \-Proprietors Tanguy and Marcella Libbrecht ## Property amenities ### Ski - Cross-country skiing nearby ### Internet - Available in the apartment: Free WiFi ### Parking and transport - Car not required - Parking on site ### Kitchen - Coffee grinder - Coffee/tea maker - Cookware, dishware, and utensils - Electric kettle - Hob - Microwave - Oven - Paper towels - Refrigerator - Spices - Toaster ### Dining - Dining table ### Bedrooms - 3 bedrooms - Bedsheets provided - Sofa bed ### Bathroom - 2 bathrooms - Bathtub or shower - Hair dryer - Shampoo - Shower - Soap - Toilet paper - Towels provided ### Living spaces - Dining table - Living room ### Entertainment - Books - DVD player - Games - Smart TV - Video library ### Outdoor areas - Barbecue grill - Outdoor furniture - Patio ### Laundry - Laundromat nearby ### Work spaces - Desk - Desk chair - Office ### Comfort - Heating ### Pets - No pets allowed ### Suitability/Accessibility - Smoke-free property - Note from host: $500 automatic charge for smoking in house ### Services and conveniences - Iron/ironing board - Limited housekeeping ### Location highlights - In the city centre - Near a hospital - Near the marina ### Things to do - Birdwatching nearby - Fishing nearby - Hiking/biking trails nearby - Horseback riding nearby - Kayaking nearby - Motor boating nearby - Mountain biking nearby - Mountain climbing nearby - Rafting nearby - Rock climbing nearby - Sailing nearby - Sledding nearby - Snowmobiling nearby - Whale watching nearby - Wildlife walks nearby ### Safety features - Carbon monoxide detector (host has indicated there is a carbon monoxide detector on the property) - Smoke detector (host has indicated there is a smoke detector on the property) - Fire extinguisher - Deadbolt lock ### General - Unit size: 1,200 square feet ## Similar properties ![View from property](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/16000000/15690000/15682900/15682818/b85b4b00.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Brown and Hawkins Historical Apartments Seward - Kitchen - Parking included - Free Wi-Fi - Microwave 7.8 Good 99 reviews £110 includes taxes & fees 16 Apr - 17 Apr [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-16&endDate=2026-04-17&selected=15682818&PinnedHotelID=15682818&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Front of property](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/114000000/113150000/113141800/113141768/9423e8d5.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### The Tides Inn Seward - Parking included - Free Wi-Fi - Microwave - Kitchen 2.0 1 review [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-17&endDate=2026-04-18&selected=113141768&PinnedHotelID=113141768&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Outdoor spa tub](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/23000000/22660000/22653300/22653239/20ba3e38.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Front Row Townhouse Seward - Hot tub - Kitchen - Washing machine - Dryer 9.8 Exceptional 9 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-17&endDate=2026-04-18&selected=22653239&PinnedHotelID=22653239&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![48-inch Smart TV with digital channels, fireplace, Netflix](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/101000000/100830000/100826300/100826256/4c0c48cb.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Lakeshore Cabins Homer - Kitchen - Washing machine - Parking included - Free Wi-Fi 10 Exceptional 27 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-17&endDate=2026-04-18&selected=100826256&PinnedHotelID=100826256&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Exterior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/83000000/82800000/82798600/82798532/f310c882.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Clear creek cabin Seward - Kitchen - Washing machine - Dryer - Free Wi-Fi 10 Exceptional 56 reviews £481 includes taxes & fees 2 May - 3 May [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-05-02&endDate=2026-05-03&selected=82798532&PinnedHotelID=82798532&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Outdoor dining](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/28000000/27270000/27263900/27263837/w799h599x1y1-20077817.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Seward Scenic Alaska River Cottage Trail River Gardens 30791 Seward Highway Moose Pass / Seward - Kitchen - Washing machine - Dryer - Free Wi-Fi 9.6 Exceptional 153 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-04-17&endDate=2026-04-18&selected=27263837&PinnedHotelID=27263837&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Exterior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/28000000/27130000/27128700/27128700/018759fc.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Jack London’s Cabin Genuine Alaskan Log Cabin built by owners! The 1905 Government Cable Office - Self check-in was very easy. The apartment is in a great location within walking distance of the historic Downtown and SeaLife Center. It was very comfortable but could definitely use a little general sprucing up - new pillows and bedding perhaps along with a bit of a kitchen tweak. We were only there two nights and were busy during the day, so there was not enough time to study all the interesting period art and knickknacks in detail, but they created a pleasant atmosphere that we enjoyed very much. We loved the location and the charm of this old house. Unfortunately, the beds were just as old. With the footboard, the bed was too short and very uncomfortable. Aside from that, our stay was pleasant. ##### Sara F. Stayed 2 nights in Jul 2023 Verified ### 6/10 Okay #### Kelley H. 2 Jul 2024 Liked: Check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### Great location! The location of this rental can’t be beat! You can walk to restaurants, the Sea Life Cevter, and the water. The property wasn’t the cleanest, when we checked in, there were dirty wet towels left in the bathroom and a terrible fishy smell that was leftover from the prior guests. This house has all the charm of an old house and the quirks that come along with it like creaky floors, a radiator for heating, and creaky antique dining chairs. But if location is your number one priority, this is the house for you. ##### Kelley H. Stayed 2 nights in Jun 2024 Verified ### 10/10 Excellent #### Sharon G. 16 Jun 2024 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### Perfect stay in Seward We loved the history of the house, the view from the front porch and how close it is to the water. The host was very nice. The house was being painted while we were there and the painter was so friendly. If there was anything that could use improvement it was a curtain in the bathroom to block out the light. Also the boys with us said that the sofa bed wasn’t comfortable. Oh and maybe put more fans - one for each bedroom and the living room. ##### Sharon G. Plenty of room for 4 people. Tanguy & Sebastian were very responsive. Shower had lots of hot water with pressure. Bedding was very comfortable. Full well equipped kitchen. House overlooks the water and is only 2 blocks from the main street. Unfortunately it rained our entire time there. Would have enjoyed sitting on the front porch. Really liked all the historical information displayed regarding the Cable House. Also Tanguy had an antique iron which was made at Colebrookdale Iron Works, Boyertown, PA which is around 15 minutes from our home in Pennsylvania. Learned that the iron was his wife’s grandmothers. Heat is radiator heat so was nice and toasty. ##### Shelley H. It's perfect as something different for a couple of nights or a week, but not something many people would keep as it is if they were living there permanently. Which would be a real shame.Communication in advance was great, access was easy, and the location is beautiful overlooking the water. Beds were comfortable, with plentiful bedding. We didn't make use of the kitchen, but everything you'd need seemed to be there.Things to be aware of in terms of layout - the back bedroom has a step down into it, so that one is not ideal for anyone with mobility issues. The front bedroom is the one with the en-suite.Sebastien, the caretaker, was wonderful. He texted to check in on our first of two mornings there, and then when we got back that evening, he'd left a laundry basket full of additional clean blankets and a ziplock of assorted taffy between our two access doors (inside the property, but not inside our unit), with a sweet note to say sorry the weather had turned, but hopefully the taffy would make up for it! (We thought the weather was fine actually - it had started drizzling around lunchtime but exactly in line with the forecast and what you'd expect from Alaska). These are the sorts of little gestures that go a long way.100% recommendation. ##### Lindsey A. Stayed 2 nights in Jun 2025 ---
