  • Designed by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer, construction of the house began in 1860. Construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and finally completed around 1868 by the new owner, John Wilder.

Before Hansford's death, as retold in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house had already been the scene of two deaths. In 1913, a previous owner tripped over the second floor banister, fractured his hip, and suffered a concussion, dying three days later. In 1964, a boy chasing pigeons on the roof fell over the edge and impaled himself on the iron fence below.

We absolutely loved our stay. It was so charming and homey! The beds were comfortable and the main living room was spacious. Location was perfect. We walked to everything we wanted to see. The extra bonus was free parking. We would definitely stay again.

Host?

It is old, quaint, great location, and a little risky for those not light on their toes, due to uneven floor surfaces, we wore heavy shoes at all times. I chose to pass on the non-refundable insurance option and placed a large damage deposit (5 x the insurance price) on my AmExpress card. Apparently Julie wasn't familiar w/ how VRBO handles that. So the communication may have been influenced by her lack of understanding the process. She repeatedly sent emails that there was no "hold" on my damage deposit. That is totally wrong. In addition, the VRBO site shows that I canceled 2 property reservations. So that may have tainted her attitude before hand, too. That was not the case. I clicked "book now" but never gave any credit card info to reserve any unit until one day prior. And that is the reservation we made and kept. At any rate, Julie took offense at my requesting the deposit, as there was no damage. She's rather touchy, so take care not to hurt any feelings. I know that the customer is NOT her 1st concern. I pointed out the failure of coffee maker to auto turn off after 2 hours, (we were gone all day & smelled burned coffee, dangerous) sponges being used to shim the granite near the kitchen sink, 2 large dead trees in backyard posed a threat of injury should they fall, Asian jasmine was growing into he wood siding near back steps, & the smoke alarm in the master bedroom broken. I mentioned these items to her after our stay so that she would be aware & hopefully improve the property for the next renter. She was most offended & confrontational. That is a shame. Consequently, VRBO informs me that there is a 14 day window that the host has to claim any damages. In a phone conversation Julie stated that she did not intend to provide any help in retrieving my credit card deposit. It would automatically be credited on July 7. Again: great location! Sadly, not much more!
