An escape from ordinary life, tucked away in the Lake Michigan sand dunes near the Ox-Bow School of Art campus. You will feel as though you've been transported into another time and place. This secluded, quiet, wooded setting is truly magical! Take joy in the slower pace and be off the beaten path. Relax on the wrap-around covered porch with your morning cup of coffee while listening to the songs of the local birds. If Lake Michigan is calling your name, you have the option of walking, biking, or driving to Oval Beach, which is only 1.2 miles by road. Mt. Baldhead is 0.5 of a mile away for great hiking and beautiful views, and then perhaps a backside hike down to Oval Beach! The Chain Ferry is nearby as well, 0.7 miles from the cottage, and will take you across the river into the heart of Saugatuck for great shopping and dining. In the evenings, you'll want to gather around the fire pit to make s'mores and laugh about times gone by or sit at the table chatting, playing cards, assembling puzzles, or playing board games. Built in 2012, the “Art Coast Cottage” shows near-new. The cottage offers all the modern amenities, including a fully equipped kitchen and adjacent dining area are great for meals at home. The dining table is made out of a family shipping crate dating back to 1924 - truly magical! Enjoy a quick breakfast before you go out exploring for all that Saugatuck has to offer or make an entire dinner to eat at home. The living room boasts soaring ceilings and surrounding extra-large windows with beautiful views of the surrounding woods. You will want to sit and visit with your loved ones for hours. The main level has two bedrooms and a full bathroom with a shower tub combo adding convenience for those who may have a hard time with stairs. Upstairs there are two additional bedrooms and another full bathroom with a walk-in shower. Staying at the Art Coast Cottage is your opportunity to experience a location many only dream of... Please Note: Well Water: The home uses well water, which is safe to drink, though it may taste or smell different than city water. The naturally high mineral content in the area can sometimes leave an orange tint on white surfaces, including tubs, toilets, and linens washed at the home. This is normal and not harmful. Please note: if the power goes out, the well pump will not function and water will be unavailable until power is restored. Septic System: The home operates on a septic system. Only flush toilet paper and human waste. Flushing wipes, feminine products, or other items can result in backups and damage. The property managers were fantastic and made everything easy - they even called during my stay to make sure everything was going well, and to ask if they could do anything for us. The house itself was amazing! The location is absolutely perfect - It's pretty far from everything except a neat art school in the woods up the hill. The backyard has great firepit, chairs, and picknic table. There's a trailhead that goes to "Crows Nest Overlook" very close to the house - it's a relatively mild (2 mile) trail through an old growth forest that leads to a fantastic view of the lagoon and Lake Michigan. The mornings began with free symphonies by the birds. (Saw my first hummingbird of the season) The rhododendrons bloomed all week for us. The kitchen was spacious and stocked with a lot of staples It afforded a great gathering space for culinary adventures and great conversation around the farm style table. We enjoyed the fire pit for evening gathering of gratitude and conviviality. The best stocked game closet I've ever seen. Comfortable beds, amazing shower water pressure and the coziest home feeling I've had the pleasure to rent, ever. The lake was too cold for me to swim in, but the rest of the peace of Spring before the tourists hordes take over town was well worth coming early for...Mother Nature gifted us with perfect weather. It can be a little tricky to get to the house as you have to travel on a one lane road in a heavily wooded area to get to the house. If a car is driving on the road from the opposite direction you have to back up down the hill to give the right of away. There was a tree down in the road one morning because of a storm so you could not leave but it was quickly cut up and removed. The house is in a very wooded area with lots to see and paths to walk on. We enjoyed our stay but if you are not an adventurous driver the road could cause you some problems. ##### Amy B. Check-In required stopping in at the office in downtown Saugatuck which wasn't clear to me in the VRBO listing but it was mentioned in emails directly from Mill Pond Reality. You'll want to make sure you check your email inbox instead of relying on communication via VRBO. Once we checked in communication with the property managers was good.Propane tanks were empty and I was instructed to get it filled at a local supermarket and they would reimburse. The supermarket was out of propane so we had to hunt a bit for it.I also want to add because I'm not sure it's clear from the listing: the house is pretty much ON (not near) the Oxbow campus which is open to students 24/7\. There is a very busy parking lot directly next to the house which stayed busy throughout the weekend (parking for a popular trailhead). There is a lot of vehicle and foot traffic directly next to the house. I think this should be made clearer in the listing. The photos and description provided by the property managers seem to leave this out intentionally and I don't think it's fair to potential guests or the locals to do so. ##### Christopher R.
