"Came in the off season, and it was a complete bait and switch. Actual hotel was closed (including pool and restaurant (so no breakfast)). Placed us next door in tiny apartments. Manager gave us the key and left the property. First room had a broken toilet seat so moved us to another one. Staff spoke no English and didn’t understand that we need password for WiFi. Blanket on bed was wet. We were supposed to stay 2 nights but left the next morning."

Top Sarakinos Hotel Reviews

Katalagari Country Suites

Katalagari Country Suites

10/10 Excellent
"We stayed at this hotel for two nights toward the end of our trip to Crete, and it was a great experience. The hotel is conveniently located just off the main highway, perched on a hillside overlooking the Cretan countryside. We had a spacious suite with a balcony offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The staff were exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and a genuine pleasure to chat with. Our stay included a complimentary breakfast, which was excellent. Breakfast was served on a outdoor terrace adjacent to the pool, making for a great way to start the day. The combination of beautiful scenery, peaceful surroundings, comfortable accommodations, and warm hospitality made this a memorable stay. We enjoyed our time here and would gladly return!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Sarakinos?
The best area to stay in Sarakinos is around the main square and the streets immediately surrounding it, as this forms the heart of the village.

This central area is where you'll find the majority of the village's amenities. The main square is a focal point, often bustling with locals and visitors, and it's surrounded by traditional tavernas and small shops. The streets here are narrow and pedestrian-friendly, offering a genuine feel of Cretan village life.

Couples looking for a relaxing and authentic Greek experience will find this area particularly appealing. You can enjoy leisurely meals at the tavernas, sample local wines, and simply soak in the unhurried pace of village life. Many accommodations here are renovated traditional homes, offering a unique stay.

For travellers who appreciate quiet evenings and want to be close to nature, consider staying slightly outside the immediate village centre, up the hills. These accommodations often provide stunning views of the surrounding countryside and olive groves, while still being a short walk from the main square.
When is the best time to go to Sarakinos?
The best time to go to Sarakinos, Crete, is during the shoulder seasons of May, early June, September, and early October. These months offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and a more relaxing experience compared to the peak summer.

During May and early June, the island is lush and green, with wildflowers in bloom, and the sea is warm enough for swimming. Temperatures are comfortably in the mid-20s Celsius, great for exploring ancient sites or enjoying the beaches without the intense heat of mid-summer. This period is ideal for couples looking for a romantic escape, as the villages are quieter, and you can enjoy dining al fresco with ease.

In September and early October, the sea remains warm from the summer, and the scorching heat has subsided, with temperatures typically in the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius. The crowds have thinned out significantly, making it a great time for those who prefer a more tranquil holiday while still enjoying plenty of sunshine.
