Maspalomas Travel Guide

San Bartolomé de Tirajana

A coastal landscape with a sandy beach, ocean waves, and a distant mountain range.
A coastal resort with sand dunes and a sunset over the ocean.
A coastal sunset with a lighthouse and beach.
A multi-story hotel with a unique architectural design, surrounded by palm trees and a clear blue sky.
A rocky beach with waves, a hotel, and palm trees.

Miles of golden sand and vast dunes frame the stylish hotels and restaurants of one of Gran Canaria’s most popular beach resorts.

Maspalomas rests on the southern coast of Gran Canaria, basking in sunny days and lapped by the turquoise waves of the Atlantic. Soak up the sun and sea between sips of sangria and adventures across the island. The Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve is the star attraction and it’s just steps from fabulous restaurants and resorts.

Visit Maspalomas year round to enjoy the warm weather of the Canary Islands, especially if you’re seeking winter sun. Enjoy the dazzling parades of Carnival in February or time your trip with the Gran Canaria Walking Festival in October or November.

Things to do in Maspalomas

Get your camera ready to photograph the desert-like scenes of the Dunas de Maspalomas. The protected nature reserve of rolling sand hills features trails stretching down to spectacular Maspalomas Beach. Choose a patch of golden sand to suit you, from the sun bed-dotted section near neighbouring Playa del Ingles to water sports zones and secluded areas for nudists.

Next to the sand dunes, the 19th-century Maspalomas Lighthouse is a stunning photo backdrop, along with a popular spot to watch the sunset. Pack your binoculars for bird watching around La Charca Lagoon. The wetland is a sanctuary for numerous species, including herons. At the Botanical Gardens of Maspalomas, discover plant species from across the world.

Outdoor activities in Maspalomas

Make the most of the great outdoors and your love for golf at Maspalomas Golf located behind the dunes. If you’re travelling with the kids, they’ll love the slides and rafts at Aqualand Maspalomas. As for heart-pumping water sports, take your pick from jet skiing, parasailing, wakeboarding and more.

Join a guided kayaking tour to paddle around the coastline finding secret coves or set sail on a luxury catamaran to spot dolphins. For scuba divers, Gran Canaria boasts volcanic underwater landscapes and fascinating wreck dives. On land, venture off-road with a dune buggy tour. Alternatively, take an exciting day trip to hike the trails around Cruz de Tejeda in the centre of the island.

Dining and nightlife in Maspalomas

Sip honey-infused Ron Miel rum and try potaje de berros watercress soup at charming restaurants in Maspalomas. Near the lighthouse, choose a waterfront seat at the venues of Boulevard El Faro shopping complex. Pack a picnic basket full of goodies from the Maspalomas Market. If you can’t decide what you’re in the mood for, simply stroll along the seafront for plenty of options.

Keep going to Playa del Ingles, where the bars for after dinner drinks are even livelier. Yumbo Centre features international cuisine, with pubs and clubs for karaoke and live entertainment. In both resorts, you’ll find everything from piano bars to themed pubs and buzzing discos.

Getting around Maspalomas

Fly into Gran Canaria Airport for a drive, bus or taxi ride of about 20 minutes to Maspalomas. Rent a car to explore the island at your leisure or take advantage of excellent land and boat tours. Otherwise, public buses and taxis are efficient. Once you’re settled into a hotel in Maspalomas, it’s a walker’s paradise with the beach, shops and restaurants close to each other.
