At Ruuhijärvi, there are still remnants of the Salpa Line, built to defend Finland's eastern border. Plan an inexpensive holiday in Salla and visit Oulanka National Park. The park's most spectacular sights, such as Oulanka Canyon or the Kiutaköngäs Rapids are perfect destinations for a day trip. The most enthusiastic hikers will want to try the legendary Karhunkierros hiking trail.
Salla has no direct connections by air or rail, but transport is available from Kuusamo domestic airport and Kemijärvi railway station. Kemijärvi is accessible by car-carrier train from Helsinki. You can easily visit Russia from the Salla border crossing point, provided you obtain a visa in advance.
