Ancient Greek ruins, a 15th-century fortress and seafood gastronomy are among Taranto’s biggest draws. This beautiful port city is perched on a peninsula between two seas, and in addition to being a popular holiday destination is also a maritime base and commercial port.
According to legend, the city was founded by the son of Poseidon, the Roman god of the sea. However, historians prefer to believe what the records show, which is that it began as a Greek colony in the 8th century B.C. It then grew into a major centre of trade. Although a modern city, windows into the past are readily available in its old buildings and ruins.
Start your Taranto exploration in the old centre. It is built on a small island which can be reached by two bridges, one of which is a rotating bridge. At the island’s eastern end is Aragonese Castle, a former military stronghold that was constructed in the 15th century. Join one of the free guided tours through its rooms, passageways and towers. Opposite the castle are the ruins of Temple of Poseidon, two columns from the 6th century B.C. Next, head to the old town centre for the magnificent 11th-century Cathedral of San Cataldo.
Uncover more history at the National Archeological Museum of Taranto, situated in the new part of town. The museum is housed in an 18th-century building and features artifacts that were excavated from the local area. These artifacts tell the history of the city through several eras. After your journey into the past, come back to the present with a stroll around the lush gardens of Villa Peripato.
