Prince Edward Island
Breathe clean, fresh air on this island steeped in heritage, where subsistence farming, literary tales and outdoor pursuits combine. A delightful sense of yesteryear can be felt on Prince Edward Island. Green pastureland, beaches lapped by deep blue seas, rich red earth and pretty Victorian houses make for a tranquil location. Come here to get away from it all, go back to basics and enjoy the simple pleasures of good farm-to-table food and warm hospitality.
Prince Edward Island is most famously known as the setting for the acclaimed novel Anne of Green Gables, written by local resident Lucy Maud Montgomery. Her legacy is everywhere, and if you were not a devoted fan before your trip, you will be afterwards.
The pretty little town of Cavendish is the heart of Gable attractions. Walk through the Green Gables Heritage Place in the magnificent Prince Edward Island National Park, a patchwork of dunes, wetland and forests. Or, discover the origins of the author at Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Birthplace or the Anne of Green Gables Museum.
Discover the capital of Charlottetown. With its excellent restaurants and friendly vibe, it makes for a charming place to base yourself. There are plenty of family-friendly activities, from the Confederation Centre of the Arts with its changing programme of performances, to the Point Prim Lighthouse with a museum and staggering views from the top.
Prince Edward Island’s culinary scene is a true highlight. It is based on locally produced, farm-to-table ingredients, crafted into hearty dishes. The lobsters are legendary, as are the oysters and mussels, which are all bought straight from the fishing boats. Visit organic farms and try artisan foods, from potato vodka to ice cream.
Work off all that food with some active sports. Go on a bike ride along the Confederation Trail, often hailed as one of the world’s best cycling routes, or enjoy a round of golf in New Glasgow. Or simply set out to discover the delightful towns of Mount Stewart, Morell, and St. Peters and Souris.
There are three ways to get to Prince Edward Island: make the scenic drive across Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick, hop on the ferry from Nova Scotia, or fly in to Charlottetown airport.
