The Postojna Cave is an intricate network of tunnels decorated by stalagmites and other natural features. An electric train runs through the intriguing passageways, which lead deep into the hillside before opening up at the site of a magnificent Renaissance castle. Take a guided tour of the cave system to learn about its bizarre formations. Spot the cave’s olms, which are the largest troglodytic amphibian in the world. The pink worm-like creatures live in water and can be seen in the tour’s aquarium. Marvel at the incredible cave formations illuminated by brightly colored lights as your train travels past. Take an audio guide to learn more about each of the cave’s rooms, such as the elegant White Hall. Read the Golden Book of Visitors to find out which famous figures have visited the cave. Cave tours are held every hour from morning until early evening in summer. Note that the tours are a little less frequent during winter. Buses provide a connection between the town’s main train station and the cave's entrance. (42 reviews) We stayed for five nights. Our arrival was miserable. We drove from Split. Our intention was to arrive by 8pm, but due to some delays, we arrived at 9:30pm. The reception had left at 9pm. The front door was locked. There was a note: call a local number to gain entry. Being from Canada, we tried to avoid costly cellular roaming fees and were travelling with data only (eSIM). So we couldn’t call the number. After trying to contact the property via Expedia (which failed), we finally enabled roaming (expensive), and were able to speak to the property and they talked us into locating keys in a lock box. The room we got was room 7…one of three attic rooms. We had to lug our suitcases way up to an attic level…the stairs were not lighted…and we finally, using the phone’s flashlight, were able to enter the room. This room was built between roof trusses and beams. To get into the beds required climbing over wooden beams while avoiding hitting one’s head on a slanted wall/ceiling. Accessing one bed required climbing under a steel rod while climbing over a wooden beam. Quite dangerous and not acceptable in terms of safety. We stayed in this room for the first night but insisted that we receive a better room. We moved into room 2, not an attic room, for the last four nights. Note…the photos of the attic room skillfully manage to conceal the hazards. The lower level room was much better. If staying there you can obtain a 10% discount on tickets if bought from the reception desk in Hotel Jama (in the park); also avoids the potentially long queues at the main ticket office. ### 5/5 - Excellent Verified traveller If using public transport, get bus to Postojna and walk 10 minutes to cave. Far more buses go here, especially on way home. Buses to caves not regular or on time. ### 5/5 - Excellent Verified traveller Definitely worth seeing. Easy to get to by public transport plus you get to see gorgeous landscape en route. The caves are spectacular- the best I have ever seen.
