On the right bank of the Tagus river, where there was once the beach of Bethlehem, it was originally surrounded by water around its perimeter. Over the centuries it was surrounded by the beach, even today incorporate the land. One of the "ex libris" of the city, the monument is an icon of architecture of the reign of Manuel I of Portugal, in a synthesis between the tradition menagemde medieval tower and baluartemoderno where it had artillery pieces. Over time the tower lost its defense function of the Tagus bar and, from the Philippine occupation, old barns gave way to the dungeons. Walls are also really thin so if you are a light sleeper you might not feel the most well rested, you can hear guests closing and opening the door and staff cleans the room early so you can really hear everything.
