The best area to stay in Pitumarca for most travellers is within the main village itself, or in one of the specific lodges located closer to the starting points for the Rainbow Mountain treks. For those prioritising convenience and an early start to the Rainbow Mountain trek (Vinicunca), staying in the village of Pitumarca offers practical advantages. While Pitumarca itself is a small, traditional Andean village, some local guesthouses provide basic accommodation. This allows for a very early departure, beating the crowds to the mountains.Alternatively, for a more comfortable and well-appointed experience, particularly for couples, consider one of the purpose-built lodges situated a bit further up the valley, closer to the trailheads for Rainbow Mountain or the Red Valley. These lodges, while fewer in number, typically offer better amenities, including hearty meals and comfortable rooms, specifically suiting trekkers.

The best time to visit Pitumarca for trekking is during the dry season, which runs from May to October.During these months, you'll experience clear skies and less rainfall, making for more comfortable and enjoyable hikes, especially on multi-day treks. The temperatures are generally milder, though nights can still be quite cold, particularly at higher altitudes. This period is ideal for travellers wanting to experience the region's natural beauty without the challenges of muddy trails or obscured views. For those looking to combine trekking with a quieter experience and potentially lower prices, the shoulder months of April and November can also be a good option. While there's a higher chance of rain, you'll find fewer crowds on the trails and in the towns. This can be particularly appealing for couples or solo travellers who prefer a more tranquil trip.
