A marina with boats, a pier, and a building labeled "BREAKWATER".

Water is the star attraction at this harbour-side suburb, where seafood restaurants, fun-filled water parks and maritime museums are within easy walking distance.

Visit Hillarys and choose between a day out on the water fishing or looking for whales, shopping in stylish boutique stores or simply strolling along the marina and admiring the boats. Dine in waterfront restaurants that serve tasty cuisine from all over the world and enjoy visiting the water parks and museums.

The attractive waterside suburb of Hillarys is a 20-minute drive north of Perth. The year-round warm climate and sparkling blue ocean make this a great place to come for a day away from the city or for an extended beach getaway. Head to Hillarys Beach and cool off in the blue water or stretch out on the white sand. Book a charter boat with one of the many operators along the harbour and try your luck whale-spotting, fishing or diving.

Families can fill their days visiting attractions such as the Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA), where exotic and colourful species from local waters and beyond fill the tanks. Just as popular is the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre, which contains interactive exhibits where children can learn about the wonders of the ocean. Give your kids the chance to enjoy excitement and splashes on the water rides in the Great Escape Leisure Park.

Walk along the harbour to see where affluent families moor their yachts. Join local residents enjoying a drink in a bar overlooking the water. Fill your day with shopping in the superb boutique stores along the harbour. Select swimwear, clothing and souvenirs. Dine in style at the many restaurants. Enjoy a plate of fresh prawns while watching the sunset over the water.

Hillarys is 16 miles (25 kilometres) from Perth. Rent a car or catch public transportation. Once there, cover the harbour area on foot or catch a suburban bus if you prefer. Take the ferry to nearby Rottnest Island, where you can see World War II relics and abundant wildlife.
