If you’re visiting the area around Antibes and the French Riviera, don’t miss a day trip to star-studded Cannes, filled with elegant boutiques, gourmet restaurants and flashy yachts. The Palace of Festivals and Congress Hall is home to one of the things for which Cannes is famous: the celebrated Cannes Film Festival.
About the Palace of Festivals
The Palace of Festivals and Congress Hall was actually built for the sole purpose of hosting the festival. The first version was constructed in 1947, just a year after the first Cannes Film Festival was held, and in 1979 work began on a new Palace to meet the growing demands of the festival. The building was moved to the end of La Croisette, near the Old Port, and was finally completed in 1982.
An Architectural Icon in Cannes
The Palace was renovated in 2013 and 2014, turning it into the impressive concrete and glass structure that it is today. The Palace features 35,000 sq metres of exhibition space and 15 auditoriums. As well as the Cannes Film Festival the building hosts around 40 to 50 international professional events per year, bringing a total of around 300,000 delegates.
The Home of the World-Famous Film Festival
Today the Cannes Film Festival is the cultural event with the most media coverage in the world, and is only surpassed by two sports events: the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup.
Those wanting to catch and glimpse of the glitz and glamour surrounding the annual festival at the Palace of Festivals and Congress Hall should aim to visit in May. Other sights near the Palace include the Vieux Port and Le Suquet – the town’s oldest quarter and La Croisette – the iconic palm-lined promenade.
