Old Town Oviedo Travel Guide

Oviedo

A narrow street with colorful buildings, a sign for Plaza Trascorrales, and a church spire in the background.
A historic square with a prominent cathedral featuring a tall spire and intricate architecture.
An ornate church interior with wooden pews, stone columns, and religious artwork.
A bustling street with historic buildings, outdoor cafes, and people walking.
A cathedral interior with high vaulted ceilings, arched windows, and a central altar.

Wander amid the many lanes of the historic centre where interesting architecture, a leafy park and traditional apple cider await.

The Old Town of Oviedo comprises an array of stunning and intriguing churches, historic plazas and museums. A large rhombus-shaped park marks this fascinating district, which is mostly pedestrianized. Walk through the narrow alleys of this old quarter for a sense of the local traditions and customs.

Among the highlights of the district is the Church of San Isidoro, which has an intricate façade with a tall tower rising from its side. It overlooks the large and spacious Constitution Plaza that marks the city centre. Relax with a coffee and watch people go by in this glorious square, which is surrounded on all sides by historic structures. Gaze up at the plaza’s 17th-century Oviedo City Hall.

Head to a traditional restaurant for typical Asturian food and drinks, such as chorizo and apple cider. You can also find out about regional culinary traditions in El Fontan Market, where chatty vendors pack their stalls with seafood, cheeses and all manner of local delicacies.

Learn the history of the region in the Archaeological Museum of Asturias, housed in the 16th-century Benedictine monastery of San Vicente. Visit the Church of San Juan (Iglesia de San Juan el Real), where General Franco got married. Relax in the verdant fields of the Campo de San Francisco park and walk along the commercial avenue of Calle Uria that flanks it.

The historic centre is in central Oviedo, a short walk south from the Oviedo railway station. Get around the old quarter’s periphery by bus and explore pedestrianized parts on foot.

The fascinating blend of architecture in the Old Town offers glimpses of the Spain of General Franco and beyond.
