Take a scenic boat trip to this miniature island to see its impressive church and learn from guides about its legendary origins.

Enshrouded in legends and folklore, Our Lady of the Rocks is a tiny, idyllic islet hosting its namesake church. A museum and a gift shop complement the large church on this artificial island, which is crafted from rocks and sunken ships. Snap photos of the iconic blue domes of the ecclesiastical building.

Walk the entire perimeter of this enchanting islet in a matter of minutes. Gaze up at the cylindrical bell tower of the church. Capture photos of the structures on the island, with a picturesque backdrop of verdant mountains and the Bay of Kotor. A navigational light stands at the western point of the island and notifies ships of the tiny island’s location.

Enter the church to admire its array of impressive works of art. The site contains 68 paintings by local 17th-century Baroque artist Tripo Kokolja. Inspect the collection of silver religious tablets and examine the tapestry that took artist Jacinta Kunić-Mijović 25 years to complete. It features some of her own hair.

Take a guided tour of the island for a small fee and chat with the docent for a comprehensive understanding of the local culture. Legend has it that mariners set up the island after finding the image of Madonna and Child on a rock in the sea in the 15th century. Participate in the local custom of throwing rocks into the sea to mark the celebration of that occasion. Make sure to wear appropriate modest clothing to visit the Catholic church.

Our Lady of the Rocks is just off the coast of Perast in northwestern Montenegro. It stands in the Bay of Kotor, which leads to the Adriatic Sea. Take a boat trip from the Perast harbour and stay for the afternoon, before making a return trip. Visit nearby sights, such as the Perast Waterfront, the Bronza Palace and the Perast Marina.
