On the furnished balcony with sea view you can spend relaxing holidays and enjoy the atmosphere of Otranto. Casa Nicole is the ideal solution for those who want to spend a carefree holiday in the heart of the city, near the historic center and the beaches. The promenade, supermarkets, restaurants and bars are just a 5 minute walk away. In addition, beautiful castles and ancient watchtowers await your visit.
Otranto, between sea and history
Otranto was born as a Messapian center in Roman and Byzantine times later only to undergo the Aragonese, of which significant traces remain with the presence of the great castle, around which the whole city has developed over time.
The historic center of Otranto is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and in its streets and alleys you can breathe the scent of the history that characterized it.
In the 15th century Otranto was attacked by the Turkish fleet, which found the resistance of the Otranto, who decided not to give in to the request for retraction made by the Muslims, who in response killed 800 people on the Colle della Minerva, those who today represent the holy martyrs of Otranto , whose remains are preserved in the beautiful Norman Cathedral of Otranto.
In the same Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, you can see the largest mosaic in Italy, the Tree of Life, which extends along the aisles, made by the monk Pantaleone.
Otranto is also characterized by other churches that tell the story: Church of San Pietro, Church of the Madonna Dell'altomare, which dominates the seafront, Church of Santa Maria dei Martiri, Church of Santa Maria del Passo.
In the area there are also several crypts and catacombs dating back to the 10th / 12th century.
The Aragonese Castle of Otranto, with its irregular pentagonal towers, ramparts and moat is today one of the most evocative historical attractions for tourists who come to Otranto.
On the Otranto coast there are also several towers that served as a defensive bulwark against the Saracen invasions Torre di Sant'emiliano, Torre di Santo Stefano and Torre del Serpente, once used as a lighthouse, which still stands today on the ridge of Otranto
