Wander the zigzagging lanes of a hilltop old town and then relax and soak up the sun on beaches set along Italy’s glorious Tyrrhenian Sea coastline.

Nicotera is a picturesque tourist destination situated on the toe of Italy’s boot. It combines the atmosphere of a centuries-old historic centre with the vibrant activities of beach clubs. The origins of Nicotera date back to the 4th century and it grew to prominence around 1065, when Norman adventurer Robert Guiscard established a seaport with links to Sicily. Today it is an enjoyable stop on a tour of the Vibo Valentia province, in the sun-drenched Calabria region.

Discover ancient landmarks and time-honored Italian traditions by exploring the old town on foot. Porta Palmentieri is the main gateway, from where cobblestone lanes pass through archways to sleepy plazas and terraces with sweeping coastal views. Visit Castle Ruffo, where a fortress has stood since the 11th century. The alleys of the Giudecca Old Jewish Quarter are also worth investigating.

Another interesting landmark is the Cathedral of Nicotera, which overlooks the glistening sea. Adjacent to here, the Diocesano d’Arte Sacra Museum has exhibitions of antique furniture, jewellery, paintings and silverware. A 10-minute walk south from the town is the Cava Romana, a quarry home to Roman relics.

Nicotera lays claim to being the birthplace of the Mediterranean diet. Find taverns that serve plates inspired by fresh ingredients such as fish, fruits, olive oil, vegetables and whole grains. Sit at an outdoor patio on a cool evening, feast on homemade pizzas and sip on Calabrian wines.

Below the old town and stretching along the Tyrrhenian Sea is Nicotera Marina beach village. Join local beachgoers that flock to the lidos (beach clubs) during the hot summer months. The sea here is famous for its glistening shades of purple and violet. Lido la Carioca and Lido Medameo have amenities such as bars, restaurants, sun loungers and umbrellas.

Reach Nicotera by flying to Lamezia Terme International Airport from major Italian and European cities. It’s then about a 90-minute journey by train to the town. Rent a car and visit the nearby Calabrian towns of Pizzo, Rosarno and Tropea.
