Pocket Guide: Moritzburg

The lakeside village of Moritzburg is famous for its Baroque castle, legendary horse breeding and as the home of German artist, Kaethe Kollwitz. The village dates back to the late 1200s, however, it was only during the 19th century when the narrow gauge railway arrived, connecting it to nearby Dresden, that it has become a popular tourist destination.

Highlights of Moritzburg

The village is dominated by Moritzburg Castle, an 18th-century Baroque palace surrounded by a beautiful lake. Inside, Moritzburg Castle houses several royal collections, including the largest hunting trophy collection in Europe, and the Feather Room, with over a million exotic bird feathers. Close to the castle estate is the rococo-style Little Pheasant Castle, a tiny palace with a footprint just 130 square feet.

Plan your visit for August and get tickets for the popular annual Moritzburg Festival of Chamber Music.

Hotels in Moritzburg

You could stay at a hotel in Dresden and enjoy a day trip to Moritzburg, but, to really get a feel of this charming little village, it's well worth spending a night or two here. While accommodation is limited close to the castle, there are authentic Saxon hotels around Moritzburg and Reichenberg. Some hotels offer free airport or train-station shuttle services.

Exploring the Greater Dresden Area

The Free State of Saxony is on the northern Czech Republic border and it's easy to explore the entire region by car or via the extensive public bus and train network. Book a hotel in Dresden's historic centre, Altstadt, and you'll have easy access to all stations to explore the best of the Saxony region.

Saxony's Wine & Dining Scene

Saxony is one of Germany's smallest wine regions, and much of the wine produced here is kept for local consumption. However, you can sample the local grape in one of the many traditional brewhouses and wine bars in Dresden's old town, or venture across the river to Neustadt, where you'll find quirky bistros, hip wine bars and restaurants all serving good Saxony wine.
