I rented this house over the long October weekend so that a couple of mom friends and myself could get away with our kids. We love Montauk, come here often and have stayed in Culloden shores the last few summers due to its great proximity to beaches, restaurants/Gosmans, and the ability for kids (and moms) to walk or ride bikes easily.
However, this house will not be returned to. Upon arrival we were surprised to find several "in your face" Trump related items. A chair painted with Trump's face on the front porch, stickers on the entry door, a couple of flags with "he won, get over it" type messages over the bunk beds where kids would have slept. Even the wifi password. While none of us are big Trump fans it had less to do with that and more to do with the overt, sin your face messaging and the many questions we had to answer with the kids. It simply was surprising given that this is a rental.
More importantly, there was a camera in the kitchen to watch over the kitchen and main living area. While I too have outdoor cameras at home and understand safety needs, this one made us uncomfortable. We unplugged it as we headed out in search of some late night dinner and I realize I should have texted the John, the owner, but I had intended to contact him after we fed kids. Instead, we came back to a stranger on our porch telling us that John had sent him to "check something in the basement. Mindful that these are Covid times and he was not wearing a mask we were uncomfortable with this whole situation. When I asked to speak to John I was told it had to do with an error from the security system. I explained we had unplugged the kitchen camera - John then went on a rant about security and how we had no right to do that and he "needed to know if someone broke in to rob him" (never mind if someone broke in that we would be in there). I calmly but firmly explained that we were not comfortable with children (or ourselves) being on camera and had no idea who he was or who might be watching. I further explained that I was fine with outdoor security cameras but that a camera in the kitchen/family room was unacceptable. After telling me that "this may not be the place for us" (mindful this is now 10:30pm on a holiday weekend) he finally relented.
The house itself was clean, well kept and stocked. A lot of prior guests or owners' refrigerator items were there so we worked around those. Sadly with these issues though we will not be renting again.
