Pocket Guide: Monaghan

County Monaghan is a nature lover’s dream. Located in the north-west of Ireland on the border with Northern Ireland, County Monaghan is made up of dramatic mountain ranges, beautiful lakes and rich forest areas - providing a breathtaking landscape, interspersed with quaint towns and villages.

A place of colour, character and beautiful nature, County Monaghan offers a warm Irish welcome to visitors of all ages.

Explore Nature with a County Monaghan Hotel

County Monaghan has several beautiful forests and lakes to explore. Lough Muckno Leisure Park in Castleblayney is a particularly notable spot. Explore the many forest trails and enjoy spectacular views over the lake. For the more adventurous traveller, there is a range of watersports on the lake, including waterskiing, wakeboarding, boating and fishing.

Another luscious forest lies 18 miles west of the park. Dartrey Forest comprises a series of romantic lakes joined by the Dromore River. The rich landscape of this area has been described as “languishingly beautiful”. The lakes are broken up by a unique, black island with a grand temple in the middle. Modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, the temple is of significant architectural importance and was originally built as a mausoleum, although it no longer houses any remains.

On the northernmost tip of County Monaghan, straddling the border with County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, stands Slieve Beagh, a mountainous area, which includes the highest point in the county. The summit stands at 1,250 feet and is a popular walking spot for visitors from around the world. Here you will also find a range of lakes and rivers cutting through the valley.
