The best area to stay in Middelburg is the historic city centre, particularly around the Markt and Abbey complex. This central area is the heart of Middelburg, offering a delightful blend of historic architecture, independent shops, and excellent dining options. The Markt is the main square, bustling with activity, especially on market days. Just a short walk from here, you'll find the impressive Middelburg Abbey, with its towering "Lange Jan" (Long John) abbey tower, which you can climb for panoramic views. The streets here are pedestrian-friendly and easy to navigate on foot. Couples will find this area particularly appealing for its romantic setting and easy access to cultural sights and cosy restaurants. For visitors who appreciate a slightly quieter setting but still want to be within easy reach of the main attractions, the area just outside the immediate city centre, near the canals, is a good option. You're still only a 5-10 minute walk from the Markt but can enjoy a more residential feel.

The best time to visit Middelburg is during the late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) months. These periods offer pleasant weather, with comfortable temperatures ideal for exploring the town on foot or by bicycle. You'll find fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed experience when visiting attractions like the Abbey of Middelburg or enjoying a canal tour. The shoulder seasons also often present good value on accommodation and flights. For those who enjoy a lively option and don't mind larger crowds, July and August are also excellent as the town is fully abuzz with outdoor cafes, street performers, and longer daylight hours. However, booking well in advance is essential during this peak season.
