What fitness activities should I do in Matera?
Matera provides a unique backdrop for maintaining your fitness routine, blending ancient history with opportunities for active exploration.

Exploring the Sassi districts on foot is an excellent way to combine sightseeing with exercise. The labyrinthine alleys, steps, and pathways of the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso offer a natural, invigorating workout as you discover cave dwellings, rock-hewn churches, and panoramic viewpoints. Guided walking tours are available, providing insights into the city's history while ensuring a thorough exploration of its unique terrain.

For a more structured outdoor experience, the Parco della Murgia Materana offers fantastic hiking and trail running opportunities. This archaeological and natural park, located just across the Gravina canyon from the Sassi, features marked trails that lead through ancient cave settlements, along the canyon rim, and past stunning rock formations. It's an ideal setting for those who appreciate a challenging walk or run amidst breathtaking scenery.

For indoor fitness, several local establishments offer modern gym facilities. These typically include a range of cardiovascular equipment, free weights, and resistance machines, often with flexible access hours to accommodate varying schedules. Some also offer group fitness classes such as spin or yoga, providing a familiar routine in an extraordinary setting.

Finally, for a unique cultural and physical activity, consider participating in a traditional Italian cooking class that involves hands-on preparation.
Which are the best areas to stay in Matera to be near healthy food options?
Matera offers several delightful areas for those keen on healthy dining, blending historical charm with convenient access to nutritious fare. The Sassi di Matera, particularly Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, are central for exploring and provide a good selection of eateries committed to fresh, local ingredients.

Within the Sassi, you'll discover charming restaurants and trattorias that often highlight regional produce. Many establishments focus on the Mediterranean diet, featuring abundant vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Look for menus that emphasize locally sourced, seasonal ingredients for an authentic and healthy culinary experience.

The modern city centre, just above the Sassi, also offers excellent choices. This area is more accessible by car and features a broader range of shops, including health food stores and markets. Here, you can find organic produce and specialty items, making it convenient to prepare your own healthy meals if your accommodation includes kitchen facilities.

For those who enjoy a stroll, the area around Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Via Ridola is vibrant and often has cafes and smaller eateries offering lighter options like salads, fresh fruit, and wholemeal pastries. These spots are superb for a healthy breakfast or a light lunch.
