This beautiful cottage is a listed building which retains many of its original features. Conservation is a priority and we use local craftsmen using traditional methods and materials to renovate this unique property. It is set in the Lockeridge Dene (a dry valley), and is surrounded by fields full of Sarcen stones. In pre-historic times some of these stones were dragged 3 miles to make World Heritage Site, Avebury Stone Circle. There are many other Neolithic sites to see in the area; West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill are among the best known locally. Stonehenge is about 25 miles away and an easy drive. There is a bluebell woods just up the hill which is amazing in late spring, but beautiful anytime of the year. We are on the North Wessex Downs so it's great walking country. There is the National Cycle Route 45 a mile away, as well as good off road cycling. If you're not feeling energetic the cottage is very cosy and a great place to sleep, relax and rejuvenate. It has a beautiful English country garden with an guest area for you too use. Marlborough is our nearest town about 3.5 miles away. It is a market town with a Waitrose and Tesco supermarket as well as great shops and restaurants including Rick Stein's Fish Restaurant, Indian and Italian restaurants. More locally there is the village pub which serves good food, or the Bell at Overton which is more of an Indian restaurant. Marlborough hosts a music festivals in late July. There is also the Marlborough Summer School in July and August with a vast array of courses and Children's Activities. ## Property amenities ### Beach - Beach loungers ### Internet - Available in the cottage: WiFi ### Parking and transport - Car recommended - Parking on site ### Kitchen - Blender - Coffee/tea maker - Cookware, dishware, and utensils - Dishwasher - Electric kettle - Hob - Oven - Refrigerator - Spices - Toaster ### Bedrooms - 3 bedrooms - Bedsheets provided ### Bathroom - 1 bathroom - Bathtub - Hair dryer - Shampoo - Shower - Soap - Toilet paper - Towels provided ### Living spaces - Living room - Wood stove ### Entertainment - DVD player - Games - TV with cable/satellite channels ### Outdoor areas - Garden ### Laundry - Laundry facilities - Washing machine ### Comfort - Heating ### Pets - No pets allowed ### Suitability/Accessibility - Smoke-free property ### Services and conveniences - Iron/ironing board ### Location highlights - In a rural location - In a village - Near a health/beauty spa - Near a zoo ### Things to do - Birdwatching nearby - Cycling nearby - Golfing nearby - Hiking/biking trails nearby - Horseback riding nearby ### Safety features - Carbon monoxide detector (host has indicated there is a carbon monoxide detector on the property) - Smoke detector (host has indicated there is a smoke detector on the property) - First aid kit - Fire extinguisher ### General - Garden - Unit size: 1,098 square feet ## Similar properties ![Exterior detail](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/45000000/44970000/44965700/44965652/b8596da0.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### 17th Century country Farmhouse stylishly finished, set in picturesque village Aldbourne - Kitchen - Washing machine - Dryer - Free Wi-Fi 9.8 Exceptional 49 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-02-22&endDate=2026-02-23&selected=44965652&PinnedHotelID=44965652&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Exterior](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/20000000/19710000/19708500/19708472/8c1f9a1e.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### The Rectory Lacock, family accommodation in the heart of Lacock Chippenham - Kitchen - Outdoor space - Parking available - Microwave 9.6 Exceptional 29 reviews [](https://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotel-Search?startDate=2026-02-22&endDate=2026-02-23&selected=19708472&PinnedHotelID=19708472&HadPinnedHotel=true®ionId=-1&adults=2) ![Property grounds](https://images.trvl-media.com/lodging/90000000/89680000/89675100/89675058/3c27433f.jpg?impolicy=fcrop&w=469&h=201&p=1&q=medium) ### Cosy 3-bedroom home with garden and log burner, close to the City of Bath. This was the perfect option for a respite from the city. A great base of operations for day trips in the area. ##### Michael B. One bedroom and the spacious bathroom is on the ground floor so avoiding a steep narrow staircase leading to the remaining bedrooms.Very peaceful surroundings and beds and bedding of excellent quality so we all slept soundly ##### Penny M. Stayed 5 nights in Dec 2024 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Angela H. 27 Oct 2025 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy Fabulous cottage. Very large rooms, considering age of property. Beautifully clean, comfy beds with crisp, white bedding.Bathroom has stand-alone shower which is powerful, as well as a bath with shower attachment (we did not use this). Kitchen is as described. We didn't need anything extra, but it is worth saying that there is no microwave or air fryer, if these are important to you.Check-in is very easy - turn up and go in. This is not a high crime area. The property may be a little difficult to find in the dark, however, as Google maps wanted to take us quite a way away, and what3words tells you to stop on the main road and walk across a field(!). When booked, I recommend viewing the maps and dropping a pin - ignore where Google wants to send you. Also note that although wifi is excellent inside the property, there is no signal outside at all, so you may not be able to call the owner if you get stuck.Nice pub 5 mins walk away in the village which does food. Avebury and Lacock are really easy to get to for sight seeing, and Malborough is really close for some shopping / cafe culture. ##### Angela H. Comfortable ( especially the beds) and cosy. So nice to be able to go for walks straight from the front door and an ideal spot for visiting Avebury and other ancient sites in the area. The owner was friendly and helpful. Would love to return. ##### Helen Q. Host was exceptionally friendly and kind. Had a cot for the baby and actually purchased a highchair for our convenience as well. The location is ideal for exploring the Cotswolds, Wiltshire, Stonehenge and Bath and all surrounds and close to easy access from London. Great local pubs and near a playground. Certainly recommend. ##### Verified traveller Stayed 4 nights in Oct 2023 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Mel A. 18 Sept 2024 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### Truly Gorgeous! - Just watch your head! :-) Our stay here was absolutely amazing. Communication with Jessica was fantastic and she is such a joy! The house is absolutely everything you would want from a Cotswold Cottage. The location is perfect for a base from which to make daily day trips all around the Cotswolds and surrounding areas. Just be sure to watch your head if you are like me, over 6 ft tall. I bumped mine a few times, but honestly, it just was all part of the charm of an amazing and historic property. Without question, I can recommend staying here, and it would sleep 6-adults very comfortably! Thank you Jessica, we LOVED our time in your cottage!! ##### Mel A. This house was absolutely amazing!!! There was enough room for our whole family of five and everything was very clean. The location was a dream and the village of Lockeridge was so picturesque.. Jessica was on top of everything and was a wonderful host. I highly recommend this cottage for a perfect vacation or quick get away. ##### Jennifer J. Very friendly and accommodating. Property is magical: gorgeous gardens and certainly an old world feel! Best feature in my opinion is the cozy wood-burning fireplace. Beware that two of the bedrooms are upstairs and can be accessed only by a narrow staircase. The beds are comfy and plenty of outlets for charging devices. One thing about the location is that there are minimal transport options if you don’t have a car of your own. If not then you have only a few buses a day (none on Sunday’s) to get to the downtown Marlborough area for shopping or dinner out. otherwise it’s a great stay!!! ![](https://a.travel-assets.com/ugc/hotel-reviews/4747ee3f-2594-4d28-ab86-2d88b5da2391-1758720063525.jpg?impolicy=resizecrop&rw=204&ra=fit&q=high) ![](https://a.travel-assets.com/ugc/hotel-reviews/f0d6fb36-8d10-45a4-a4cb-c55ed2d8b3b9-1758720070385.jpg?impolicy=resizecrop&rw=204&ra=fit&q=high) ##### Zach C. It’s conveniently located to all the famous sites in the area and a short walk to the local pub. Sitting by the fireplace after a rainy hike was one of the many highlights from our stay. We will definitely be back. Jessica was a super host in the truest sense. ##### Daniel H. Just the place to relax and unwind. Very pleasant unobtrusive owner lives next door. Friendly cows over the hedge wanting to say hello. We all need something like this! ##### Charles W. This house is magical and our stay was 100% worth the drive from London. Scrupulously clean; comfortable beds; with all the kitchen amenities we needed. We spent a wonderful day exploring the neolithic sites of the Avebury World Heritage Site, which are very close by. A Waitrose is available for groceries in nearby Marlborough. There is a small playground across the street that our children really enjoyed. Our host Jessica was helpful, responsive, and kind. We cannot recommend this special place enough – would return in a heartbeat. ##### Elizabeth R. There are some lovely local walks and woods and you are near Avebury and Marlborough. The local pub was shut which was a shame, but it was due to open in a few days. The host is friendly and available, but you also have the freedom and space you need to settle in and relax. There are two calm dogs which my son adored and even my daughter, who is scared of dogs, took a shine to them. Sadly the rain was out in full force all weekend but there are three double rooms and some games in the cupboard and we got out when there was a break in the clouds! ##### Mairi W. ### 10/10 Excellent #### Kevin M. 12 Jul 2022 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### An Idyllic holiday The cottage was just what we expected, picturesque, clean and with all the amenities we needed for the week. Jessica was a great host and made sure our stay was comfortable. Her two dogs casually accepted us and wandered in and out at their leisure. A nice touch. The wood burner was a great feature and made the cottage extremely cosy in the evenings. The local pub was in walking distance, with great staff who made us feel very welcome. The food and drink menu meant we came back to it most evenings. The cottage is excellently placed for trips to Averbury and the surrounding area, which has many interesting and beautiful things to see. Overall, a great holiday in a great cottage. Thanks Jessica, and of course, Iris and Grace. ##### Kevin M. The location was convenient for day trips to Bath, Cotswold, Stonehenge and the magna carta in Salisbury. The house was spectacular and cozy. My parents stayed on the ground floor (the upper level where my sister and I stayed requires steady feet). Jessica had a fire going when we arrived and my dad was thrilled. He loves a wood stove and this made him very comfortable. We cooked breakfast every morning in the small but fully functional kitchen. This was a perfect setting for the launch of our tour of England and Scotland. If you arrive after dark, be sure you've looked at the property on Google earth so you know your way around. ##### Wendy G. It may not be for everyone, but we knew what we were getting when we came. The house was built in 1710\. The cottage, with its thatched roof has all the character you could ask for. The kitchen and bathroom are modern, well equipped and the sitting area is comfortable. There's a spacious downstairs bedroom that was has been added with two large bedrooms upstairs. The beds are very comfortable. We enjoyed the wood stove on cool evenings and the connectivity and video options. There is no cell service. Lockeridge is an attractive, friendly little village with a good pub. It is only 4 miles from Marlborough, which is a delightful old market town with many eating and shopping options. Just a couple of things to know going in: the ceilings in the kitchen and sitting area and the doorways are what you would expect when it was built. In other words, my head touched the ceiling and I had to duck under the beams and doorways. (I'm 6'2") Also, the stairs to the bedrooms on the first floor are treacherous - narrow treads, with a curve at the bottom, and the risers are exceptionally high. They are not for anyone with mobility issues. Our host was friendly and helpful. Wiltshire is beautiful with rounded ridges offering views and islands of woodland between the pastures. Lots of historical properties and gardens to explore. I cannot overstate how utterly perfect our stay was, other than being too short. Speaking of too short, if you are of above average height, you will find the ceilings quite low. My wife and I are most assuredly not of above average height, so it was a delightful novelty to be able to touch the ceiling. Anyway, the property is half the building (the left half, if you're looking at the front), and the owner lives in the adjoining half. She was a great host, and her off the cuff suggestion to visit Avebury on our way back to London ended up being a highlight of our trip. There is a nice wooded walk just a short distance up the hill past the playground, and the pub down the Who'd A Thought It pub--itself a gem--is a very short walk down the street. The property is not exactly \*close\* to anything, but it's \*convenient\* to an astonishing number of things, far too many to do in one short visit. Marlborough is an easy 10-minute drive for groceries, and the home has a small refrigerator, a full stove and oven, and a small dishwasher, as well as dishes, utensils, glasses, etc. No microwave. Internet access was fast and reliable, and we honestly didn't bother with turning on the TV so I can't report on that. There are places you encounter in your life that ... fit. Something about them combines warm memories of where you're from with the most hopeful ideas of where you could be in the future. Staying at this property and everything around it was like that for me. It didn't just feel like home as much as it felt like what I wanted home to be. And, for the record, I would go back right this second if I could. ##### Crawford L. So peaceful and relaxing, this cottage was exactly what the doctor ordered. Waking up to the horses grazing in the pasture across the road, and the endless walking trails all around. Every evening we lit a fire and curled up on the couch. I wish I never had to leave. We are already talking about returning again and again in the future. ##### Erin B.
