Lustre is both a municipality and a small village in Western Norway. The village is situated on the western shore of Lustrafjord at the mouth of the River Dalsdal.
A visit to Lustre should include a trip to Jostedal Glacier which, at 123,500 acres, is the largest glacier in continental Europe. A guided tour on the blue ice of the glacier is an unforgettable experience.
Walkers are well-served in Lustre. At 3,661 feet above sea level, Molden presents a spectacular view over the fjord and surrounding landscape and Storen, Norway’s highest mountain, is also in Lustre municipality. Alternatively, down at sea level, a guided kayak trip on Lustrafjord might also hit the spot.
In summer, the fjord-side village of Solvorn with its beautiful beach – popularly called the “Costa del Solvorn” – is well worth a visit. The beach is perfect for families, as the water temperature can reach 22 degrees. Here you can also try local delicacies such as crayfish direct from the fjord, venison and homemade cheese. For those with a sweet tooth, a trip to Sogneford Chocolate Factory will be a definite hit. Sample the freshly made chocolate with added local berries.
During the winter season, Sogn Ski Centre with Norway’s longest ski lift is a popular destination, boasting the best powder snow as well as ski slopes for children. In the summer, families will love Lustrabadet – an indoor water park in Gaupne with pools for children, water slides and outdoor pools, all with spectacular views of mountains and waterfalls.
For those interested in history, Lustre also has something to offer. Travel back to the Middle Ages with a visit to Dale kirke church or take a trip to the world-famous medieval Urnes Stavkirke.
The closest international airport is Bergen from which there are connecting flights to Sogndal Airport. Many travellers rent a car from Bergen for use on their holiday in Lustre. The town can also be reached by bus from many places in Norway.
