The Old Town is Lüneburg's historic heart, characterised by its well-preserved Brick Gothic architecture and winding cobblestone streets. Am Sande is a large central square, often bustling, with impressive buildings like the Lüneburg Town Hall nearby. The Stintmarkt, on the Ilmenau River, is known for its picturesque waterfront, historic cranes, and numerous places to eat. This area is very walkable and most of the city's main sights are within easy reach.

Couples often find the area around the Stintmarkt particularly appealing. Staying here offers lovely views of the river and historic buildings, especially in the evenings when the area is lit up. It's superb for romantic strolls along the water and enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants right on the riverbank.

For those who appreciate history and convenience, staying anywhere within the Old Town's pedestrianised zone is ideal. You'll be steps away from attractions like the German Salt Museum and the Lüneburg Water Tower, and surrounded by independent shops and cafes.

The best time to visit Lüneburg Old Town is typically during the spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) months.

During spring, the weather is mild and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 10°C to 18°C. The city's parks and gardens begin to bloom, adding to its natural beauty. This period is ideal for exploring the historic streets on foot, enjoying outdoor cafes, and taking boat trips along the Ilmenau River without the peak summer crowds.

Autumn also offers comfortable temperatures, generally between 10°C and 15°C, and the changing colours of the leaves provide a scenic backdrop to the old town's architecture. There are often local festivals and wine-tasting events during this time, offering a taste of regional culture. The cooler weather is superb for leisurely strolls through areas like Am Sande and exploring the brick Gothic buildings without feeling rushed.

While summer (June to August) is also popular, with warmer temperatures averaging 20°C to 25°C, it can be busier with more tourists. Winter (November to March) is colder, with temperatures often around freezing, but the Christmas markets in December offer a festive experience.
