Be awed by the changing hues of the magnificent lakes in this region, where you can explore gorgeous waterways and try the cuisine that has a distinct European influence.
Los Lagos, or the Lakes District, is a region in Southern Chile where verdant valleys and mountain ranges are dotted with fjord-like estuaries and serene waterways. Visit charming lakeside villages and see intriguing German-style streetscapes, where colonial spires jut up against a backdrop of immense Andean peaks and active volcanos.
Explore the region’s collection of deep blue lakes and go kayaking, canyoning, fishing and hiking amid the Andean cordillera. On the coast, check out offshore islands and spot whales and seals.
Puerto Montt is Los Lagos’ provincial capital and an excellent jumping-off point for exploring the surrounding scenery and charming towns. Check out Valdivia, Osorno and Puerto Varas, which overlooks Chile’s largest lake, Llanquihue. Admire the town’s charming German architecture and breathtaking tree-lined shores. In the distance, the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes stand like two watchmen. If you have the energy and the expertise, you can summit these twin peaks.
Sharing the Llanquihue lakeshore is the village of Frutillar, which hosts concerts in a magnificent Lake Theatre on the water’s edge.
Go on a hiking or kayaking trip around Llanquihue’s pristine waters or see the breathtaking cascades of Petrohué Falls. More river adventures await in nearby Futaleufú, Chaitén and Pumalín Park.
At the staggeringly beautiful Todos los Santos Lake, experience the tranquility of the surrounding temperate rainforest, which is protected by the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park.
In the region’s west, visit Chiloé Island and meet its resident colonies of penguins and sea lions. Admire the island’s historic churches and check out the Museum of Modern Art Chiloé.
On Chiloé, visit the town of Ancud to see the San Antonio Fort and an interesting archaeology museum. Further south, you’ll find the island’s national park, which protects a verdant coastal rainforest. Try whale watching in Quellón and discover the beautiful beaches in Queilén.
Reach the serene landscapes of Los Lagos by flying into Puerto Montt. You can travel between Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas and Victoria via train. Regular buses connect the smaller towns and villages. Hire a trekking or kayaking guide to get a deeper insight into the environment.
Visit the Los Lagos region between September and April for an ideal climate for adventuring in the mountainside Lake District.
