Los Barriles

Sitting on the shores of the glistening Sea of Cortez is a town famed for being one of Mexico’s best kitesurfing destinations.

Blessed with crystal-clear water and miles of soft, golden sand, Los Barriles has the perfect combination of recreation and relaxation. Mingle with the adventurists, backpackers, families and retirees that come to enjoy the slower pace of life and excellent watersports. Los Barriles (Barrels in English) spreads around the Bahía Las Palmas, a bay on the East Cape of Baja California Sur. Legend has it that Los Barriles got its name from barrels hidden by pirates in the framing hills. 

There are few better places in Mexico for kitesurfing than  Los Barriles, especially from December to March when the wind is strongest. The image of the brightly colored sails of kitesurfers and windsurfers is a spectacular one. You can rent equipment and arrange lessons at the town’s watersport’s centers and most hotels. For something more relaxed, cruise across the water in a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard. 

Sport fishing has been popular on the East Cape since the first hotels were opened in the 1950s. Join a charter today for the chance to catch dorado, marlin and sailfish, among other species. If you prefer the less energetic side of life then simply enjoy a stroll along the wondrous coastline. Stay alert to spot dolphins, sea turtles, whales and whale sharks. 

A great way to get around is on a quad bike. Discover secluded beaches, conifer-clad mountains and deserts filled with interesting plants such as the cardon cactus. Watch for birdlife, including the Cape pygmy owl and pelicans.

Los Barriles is about 68 miles (110 kilometres) from both Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. The town merges with Buenavista to the south. An hour’s drive along the coast is Cabo Pulmo and the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park.
