He was always available, knowledgeable, attended to issues, made suggestions, reservations & drove us wherever we wanted to go, regardless of the time. He’s an extremely valuable employee & would be very hard to replace. Beachcomber is rated 3-Star so don’t expect room service. Riding push bikes up the hill is a killer. The walls are thin so you can hear everything going on in the next room. The grounds are beautifully maintained, beds comfy, relaxing verandah, kitchenette & bathroom great. We enjoyed our stay. ##### Peter Stayed 7 nights in Sep 2024 ### 6/10 Okay #### Verified traveller 12 Feb 2023 Liked: Staff & service #### Average - with some ups and downs The lodge is located, like many in Lord Howe Island, up a hill which requires hiring a bicycle or a 10 to 15 minute walk to get to the restaurants to eat or beaches to swim. There are no views from the rooms or the lodge, but they do have a very nice garden. The room was typical average Lord Howe basic / minimal - not unattractive, but very basic. It was generally clean. Like almost all accommodation on Lord Howe, there is no airconditioning, and given the constant high humidity on the island, staying in the room during the day is mostly unbearable. On the downside, the bathroom smelled of sewerage (septic tanks?), the basin constantly clogged up with water (did not drain), there was no facecloth provided, the TV signal was hopelessly fuzzy (though Youtube worked fine), and sound came in from the adjacent rooms, moreso than any other hotel I have ever stayed in. For the amount I paid for the room, I would have expected much better service. The rooms were not cleaned during my stay and guests are discouraged from asking for assistance from the single staff member. However, the facilities were not adequate and outdated. In the pandemic, the lodge's policy expressed the daily clean services would not be provided. Hence, the room became not fresh, not polished and not tidy. The policy threaten we needed to clean the bins, made room clean, otherwise additional cost would be charged. I believe I paid premium fees to stay in the lodge. Gary the owner very kindly showed us around on the way from the airport, and allowed early access and a late check out which we hugely appreciated. If you wish to dine at another restaurant Gary provides complementary shuttle and the restaurant drops you home. We had a problem withtv reception on day 1 and quickly arranged another tv. The food at t he restaurant was very good - great pizza! The room was tidied every day which was a surprise - particularlyhaving rubbish removed from the kitchenette to avoid attracting ants and coachroaches - important given the room is at ground level.
