About this property
150 Year Old Home Situated in the Picturesque Rolling Hills of Southwest WI
Cold Spring Farm’s 150-year-old home has 20 rooms, 6 bedrooms, 3 full baths (and 1 half bath), a modern kitchen, a convenient laundry room, a relaxing deck, and a campfire area. The farmhouse is situated in the scenic hills of Bear Valley on 50 acres with frontage along Bear Creek. It’s the perfect getaway for those wishing to experience country living at its fullest. This historic home is 1 of 6 possible birthplaces of Frank Lloyd Wright. Frank Lloyd Wright's father, William Wright, often visited the home, played the piano (which is still in the home), and helped entertain guests from around the world who visited the farm. Considered 1 of the 7 mansions of Bear Valley, this creamy brick home boasts lots of character and charm.
Outside, the property features a large campfire area with plenty of seating, a professional-sized corn hole game, giant Jenga blocks, horseshoe pits, a walking trail, with a spot to sit next to Bear Creek. There are several grills, a huge deck with patio furniture, and a bar with seating in the covered shed. The shed is decorated as a saloon and is approximately 30 feet x 50 feet. There is a 75" big screen TV in the living room of the house. Here is a video of the property... https://youtu.be/UYTwqLxrCWQ
Located between Spring Green and Richland Center, Cold Spring Farm is close to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, A.D. German Warehouse, American Players Theater, House on the Rock, bike paths, hiking trails, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and tubing on the Wisconsin River, and so much more. There are several beautiful state parks within 45 minutes of the farm. There are well-known wineries in southwest WI, as well as Oak Wood Fruit Farm, and two locations for Peck's Farm Market.

Four gals taking a weekend getaway found some peace and lots of laughter at this historic home. We loved exploring the home and all of the relics within it. The shed, the firepit and walking trail were lovely additions. We even saw a fox that lives nearby! Would definitely stay again.
We had a phenomenal stay for my mother's 70th birthday. The kids had a ball exploring the house and the grounds when it was sunny, and playing games together indoors when it was cold and rainy. We luckily had clear skies one night for spectacular star-gazing. The whole family asked when we can come back!
The house was very clean, secure, well lit. Fully equipped kitchen and enough dining room space for all. Extra refrigerator for drinks, nice! Short drive to APT and Taliesin.
Would stay again! Thank you!
This property is exactly as advertised and even better. All previous reviews are spot-on. Book now and read the reviews to get pumped up for your stay! We needed heat at night and it worked perfectly. So warm and cozy. So much fun! Definitely coming back.
This was our second stay here. The property is perfect for our group of 10 who gather each year around this time to attend American Players’ Theater. The location is beautiful and the many staircases make for interesting exploring in this historic old house. Communication with owners is great!
Delightful quiet location. Anout 11-12 mi outside of Spring Green.
Don’t plan on walking into town for shopping or lunch, etc. Driving to any destination is required.
That issue was fine with our group. sitting on the deck with our morning coffee , or cocktail hour was great. Amazing antiques throughout the house
I rented this house recently with a group of 9 girls. When we arrived our group was over-the-moon with the location, quality, and personality of the home! Just touring the home when we first arrived was an adventure itself. With its multitude of rooms, games, and amenities we were fully prepared for a fantastic weekend! The owners were also very helpful and easy to contact with any questions we had!
100/10 would recommend this house as your next place to stay!
We really enjoyed exploring this wonderful house! It was filled with a history of photos and period pieces. With 8 of us in our group, there was plenty of room for meals, sleeping, and just relaxing. The beds were very comfortable, there were 2 refrigerators for all our weekend treats, and 2 ice makers for our evening cocktails. We enjoyed our evening campfire. A beautiful country setting.
We needed a property with five bedrooms and multiple bathrooms so this place fit the bill. The kitchen was well-stocked with most things we needed. The beds were comfortable. We especially appreciated the piano and table games. The outdoor activities were also just fine. However, we were all rather horrified by the lack of smoke alarms in each bedroom and other rooms.
There was more than adequate room for the 7 of us! Comfortable beds, enough bedrooms and the dinning room table stretched fit our needs. The outdoor entertainment shed was very interesting,
we enjoyed the corn hole game! A note for the managers- we saw ants in the kitchen sink & saw a ground hog running from under the deck.
Overall, We had a great stay in this Farmhouse, when considering the fact that the house is 150 years old. There obviously has been various improvements.
On the plus side heat and air conditioning worked perfectly, beds were very comfortable and we enjoyed cooking in the kitchen.
All bathrooms were operational, and our 4 year old took over the tiny half-bath with the low toilet just perfect for her. We also enjoyed the many nesting birds visible from the windows for excellent viewing.
It was grand to be so close to House of the Rock, Taliesin and other sites, but the clear highlight of our trip was the fabulous state park! Two in our party are rock climbers and we all hiked while the climbers did their thing, then cooled off in the beach and nearby waterfall!
On the negative side, all the decks, both downstairs and upstairs are in need of repair! The big deck off the kitchen had tables, chairs, umbrellas, NEW cushions overlooking beautiful views of the farm country. Unfortunately, the deck itself is in need of repair, taking some of the charm away. An upstairs deck proved to be the best place to watch fireworks, but the black surface made all of our feet/socks black as well & it looked a bit unsafe.
Lastly, the trough-like-sink in the downstairs master was a mess! Some kind of plastic-like material was peeling in major swaths, making it unattractive and unusable.
A few simple refurbishments would have made this home a 5 STAR rather than a 4!
Beautiful historic house with lots of space. This house is ideal for families celebrating any and every holiday. The decor and furnishings provide a warm nostalgic feeling along with all the comfort one could want.
My adult siblings, our partners, and I spent a weekend at this location. The home was large enough for our group of 11. The building itself was a maze full of surprises. We especially appreciated the Saloon and the fire pit.
We thoroughly enjoyed our getaway! It was a beautiful spot, with rolling hills, corn fields, peaceful and quiet. The house was spacious, we all had nice bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen and wonderful outdoor areas. We were pretty close to everything we wanted to do, attend a play at the American Performance Theatre and take a tour at Taliesin. We were also close to Spring Green and Mineral Point was not too far away, both small towns have nice restaurants, and shops!
Great house—over 150 years old and full of unique character. Stand alone pole barn set up like a western saloon—we loved this addition. Great house for relaxation—great for group get together. Highly recommend it.
